and ohh yes!!! .. i do hate the Firewire interface in the front.. what a stupid idea..still what a lovely beast....

well, let me say this. A lot of companies when they paper release products like this use pre-production images. it is ENTIRELY possible that when this appears on Sager's website in a month or two that the location of the ports will be different. Don't count out that possibility yet.

from what ive seen that model looks like it is below an 8887 maybe a little between it and the 5670 so i think it should be a tad cheaper..
but probaly wont be out for a while eurocom is anticipating it out on june 1st( the d470) they seem to jump the gun in posting the future models , but their dates so far have seemed to run pretty close... they were listing the 5670 as late march early april and it matched that pretty well..

Might not like it, but it's great for when you need to plug in your digital camera..

june is not too far really... that laptop is really sexy.. but the fact that i ll have an external hd permanently plugged for audio/video in the front well.. hopfully the design may change..but i doubt it..the screen definition and quality is the only thing that will change for sure.

the 5670 is the perfect laptop right now for me.. the D's is just way more sexier..but come on : the only reason i think they had to put that interface in the front is a motherboard design limitation i hope.. i cannot imagine somebody saying "Wow!! i just got the wonderful idea about filling up all that emptyness in front of were you need to type.. you know? that keyboard thing..and that pad thing they both look ssooo lonely..we need a bunch of wires here > firewire..audio wire ( in and out) ..hmm yeah that s it!! ".....

i agree that maybe for something quick like DLing some pix and stuff from your cam, that s cool but.. how about just keeping 2 USB in the back and getting rid of that 3rd USB on the side?.. i m pretty sure that for that model, a USB > Firewire hack will be more popular than a custom color..

Firewire in front not going to change

I really doubt the 1394 port will be moved from the front. If you look at the new NP4020 (Clevo D400S), you'll see that it too has a 1394 port on the front.

It may be a motherboard issue but I'm going to guess that they did it on purpose. It provides easy access to plug in a camera. Unfortunately it's a terrible position for HDs. The audio jacks are in the front as well. Oh well. Nothings perfect I guess.

By the way, it looks like this new style will replace the 8887 and 5670 styles.

On what information do you base this on? I don't think will be seeing an end to either.

I really doubt the new style will replace the 888x , a 3 spindle design replacing a 5 spindle? kinda doubt that, also only 1 pcmcia slot

Sit back and watch. There may be an 8888 but beyond that the new style will take over.

the style may take over but not the size. im sure the 888x series will be a tad bigger than a 3 spindle design.
and what is your source?

for compatibility maybe? some people still use floppy disks beleive it or not.. and they wouldnt be making much money if they did have a piece of the patent since they are only around 20 bucks.. and you dont make money on something by just having patent or even part of it unless you decide to start sueing people using the patent for grounds..

damned i forgot to put a good looking smiley after my patent story.. i was kidding of course.. i do use a floppy once every 3 months maybe to swap a file between pcs ( the same floppy since 1991 i believe now that i think of it..) but they could make it as a usb floppy drive and get more space for somthing more important like a ..err. 2 hd or something else.. floppies are still been used of course..but not enough to be part of a laptop system in 2003..

A zip drive?

I had rather have one of those new 750 MB zip drives than a floppy, or even as an option for the extra bay.
Floppy drives really are overrated - between 5 computers in my appartment (2 people), only 2 of them have floppy drives, and they are laptops with swappable floppy drives (covered in dust ofcourse)).

I'd much rather see a 6 in 1 media card reader, or at least a compact flash / micro drive reader. My digicam came with an 8mb cf card, and I put a new 256 one in there - the 8mb one acts as my uber-floppy for transferring files - I have that and a usb cf reader.

The only thing floppies are good for are booting off of to run diagnostic programs (My laptop hd died, and I had to use the floppy drive to run a diagnostic).

But yeah, I'm kind of interested in this new sager laptop - it has 2 of the biggest features I'm looking for: widescreen & <1.5" thick.

yep.. zip drives are great too even at 100 megs... but the thing is price and there is nothing cheaper than a 700 meg cd r. i havent used my zip cartridges for the longest time and and it was mainly for my K2000.. until i got a external cd rom for it...zips are still a fast way to dump stuff and erase it pretty quick after...

well things are moving very very fast and i believe floppies belong to the 80s.. ;-)..not on such curvy sexy beast

I don't know about you folks but I love my floppy drive. I use it probably every other day. There is simply no easier way to transfer small document. Well, on second thought, those USB drives look pretty cool. I would probably get one of those instead of a floppy drive it the floppy was optional, and in a similar price range.
