Question over batteries in the 5690

I was planning on purchasing a 5690 with the dual battery set up, and a third battery to swap with the first. Would it be better to get a second hard drive or optical drive and just get another battery to exchange with the other two instead?

depends... what do u need more battery life (rember this is a desktop replacement a.k.a battery hog) or more functionality, like another hd/optical... it all depends on the users needs. Basically its give and take. I perosnally think you should stay with the dual batts and get a hd/optical. IT will up the value of your laptop and give it more resell appeal

It appears that you may not be aware that the 1st battery is essentially fixed and the 2nd battery is removable and hot-swapable. The 2nd battery occupies the same place as the floppy drive, an additional optical drive, or an additional HDD. You can't have 2 HDDs and 2 Batteroes in the machine at the same time.

That's a shame. My dad got a 5690 and was gobsmacked when I told him my 8890 could have up to 4 hardrives. He said he didn't realise the 2nd bay stuff were hotswappable, and if he did, would've gotten an extra HD and a 2nd bay battery rather than a spare primary one.

one thing nice about the 56XX is the hotswap bay... comes in handy

By what you have said, I have to get the dual battery set up to swap the second battery out while having one permanently placed inside. If I purchase another "Primary ...battery" from PCTorque, the one on their option page, will I be able to swap this with my second battery?

Are the two batteries the same if I choose the dual battery option?

Thanks

The primary and secoundary batteries are different sizes. If you select one of each when you order, you should be OK. Just don't order a 2nd Primary battery and expect that it will work as the 2nd "Hot Swappable" battery.

If you want a 2nd "Hot Swapable" battery, you will need to order the "LI-ION battery for Bay 2 here: http://pctorque.com/hardware.php#78

with dual battery, my 5690 lasts plenty long enough under a normal load, seems to be about 2-2.5 hours. gaming i havent really tried yet, but any situation where im going to be playing any real battery intensive games id be plugged in.

id just order the dual battery and leave at that to start with, itll prob be fine for you. and you can always order another one later

I just ordered a 2nd bay battery a few minutes ago. With 1 battery I am only getting about 40 minutes of normal use, not gaming. I hope it will last a bit longer with 2, well at least it will have one heck of a UPS in it….
Man I love this 5690....

I only want to use the batteries while I am in class taking notes, thats why I wanted the dual set up and maybe a third so I don't have to worry about it dying if I leave it on.
