d800 or m60?

OK. Afte months of waiting I'm going to pull the trigger. I've got it narrowed down to either the d800 or m60. Using it for business, web design, graphics, etc.

Both are similarly configured so I guess it's a question of is the m60 worth the extra money for the graphics card or are there other differences that might influence me (build quality, built-in ports, etc.)

1.7 Dothan 256 RAM (going to upgrade to 1GB crucial) 60 Gb (7200) DVD/CD-RW, Intel 2200 b/g wireless, win XP, etc.

Thanks for your opinions.

Please search this forum for "M60" and "D800" first.

Briefly, the build quality and ports are the same, and D800 can run PC2700 memory with M60's BIOS (as somms has explained), but Dell is unlikely to sell PC2700 with D800. In some countries one can't get faster drives (e.g., Hitachi's 7k60 7200rpm) with D800.

Yep, but as you're buying memory externally anyway the D800 catches up and can use 333MHz as well (if you flash with M60 BIOS as mentioned). The only real difference then is the graphics card. The M60 offers the Quadro FX 1000 (which is basically a GeForce FX 5700) comared to the FX5650 in the D800. A difference that is in my opinion not worth much more than US$100 or so, but that is your call (unless you do CAD work, in which case the FX 1000 is definately worth it).

Thanks.

Thanks very much for the information, especially the memory advice. I've decided on the d800 and will post a review when it arrives next week (hopefully).

Good Choice. As both KCK & Sakor mentioned, the D800 shares the same system board as the M60.

Yep, you should enjoy it I think, good luck!

I just bought a D800 today thats similar to yours, googly. I needed a laptop for college for the usual college work and some gaming. My university has special deals with a few suppliers, but I chose the Dell (option between d600 and d800) after having good experience with my dad's i8600. Here are the specs after I made a few upgrades:

Pentium M 735 ( 1.70GHz) 15.4 WSXGA+
512MB RAM 2 DIMMS (I would have gotten a single 256MB, but i couldn't downgrade from the 512MB set my my university)
NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5650 4XAGPgraphics w/ 128 MB DDR
60GB Hard Drive 9.5MM 7200RPM
Windows XP Pro
Internal 56K Modem
8-24-24-24X SWDVD/CDRW Combo Drive
Dell Wireless 1450 Dual Band WLAN (802.11a/b/g,54Mbps) miniPCI Card
9-Cell Primary battery
Promo 3 Yr Limited Warranty plus 3 Yr NBD On-site Service and CompleteCare (My university will repair it for free if possible. If not they will send it to Dell can give me a loner while it is being repaired)
It also comes with some extra software requested my my college
Price before tax: 2,106.00

That's a nice configuration, killersnowgoon. Some universities offer much poorer choices for their fixed configurations. Also your warranty setup looks good. What kind of extra software was requested by your college?
That setup isnt exacty the base model specified by the college. I paid an exta $300 to uprade from a 1.6 WXGA to the 735 WSXGA+, a 40GB 5400 RPM hard drive to the 60GB 7200RPM HD, and a Geforce go5200 54MB to the go5650 128MB. I'm going to live with this computer for 4 years, so I decided that it was worth it spend a little extra to make it little more viable over time. The software included isn't anything too impressive, its mostly for convenience like acrobat, quicktime, spybot, and some software for the university's network. I wish it came with office, but I can pick it up at the bookstore for cheap.

killersnowgoon:

Your upgrade was worth its price. I asked about the extra software to get some idea about its price, but your final cost was OK anyway. You should be able to get MS Office cheaply via your university's licensing agreement with MS.
