Another ASUS M6N question

Thread Starter
Hey,

This laptop is another one of my options and I have browsed numerous threads using the "Search" function revolving around this notebook. Many people complain about the LCD Screen and the "Gradient Issue". I was wondering if these problems exist still? This issue is basically veering me away from purchasing the M6N. However, I still want to consider it due to its battery life and it fits my budget perfectly.

yes there is a gradient issue on the 15" 4:3. there will be a gradient and bad viewing angles on most standard SXGA+ screens, that don't have special technology, like xbrite or anything like that. to avoid this problem you could get the M6BNe, which is a 15.4" WXGA (1200x800)

Damn that sucks. Alright, i'll check that one out instead.

So, the WXGA models of the M6x series are fine?
yeah, better viewing angles, i haven't heard of any kind of gradient thing.

Not a problem at all RS. I have a question though...do you plan on doing a lot of gaming?

No, not really heh. I might do a lan sort of thing 2-3 times a year at my cousin's house or something. Why do you ask? If you do not mind me asking.

cuase the Asus has the ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 64MB graphics card, whereas the Compal CL56, (comparable to the M6N) has the 128MB graphics card, and the Mitac 8050 (comparable to the M6BNe) also has the 128MB card. If you were doing a bunch of gaming, you would want the 128MB GPU, but for just occasional gaming, not hardcore gaming, the 64MB will be more than fine. The asus is great though. Heard nothing but great reviews. Before you order though, I would go to Best Buy, Microcenter, CompUSA, Circuit City, and look at a 15" SXGA+ vs. a 15.4" WXGA, just to see which one you like best. Let us know what you end up doing, and let us know if there are any other questions we can answer for ya

Thanks for the suggestion man. Unfortunately, the CL56 and the Mitac 8050 are very rare here in Canada.

I'll check out the screens at the stores thanks.

This is the only CL56 I found here in Canada, but the Bizcom name is veering me away from purchasing this barebone. Is it going to say Bizcom on the laptop?

oh, you're another canadian. talk to turanuk...he found a barebones Compal in canada. truthfully, for your applications, the Asus will be great, regardless if it is the M6N or the M6BNe
post #11 of 18
just be sure wherever you get it, that is has the 9700 64MB, some still have the 9600 64MB

Yup, turanuk found a CL56, but it's in Vancouver. I want to avoid shopping online. Furthermore, does the "brand name" of a CL56 matter? As stated earlier, the "Bizcom" name sounds like some crappy company. Like, did they make the notebook? I don't really understand.
what happens is the company compal makes the chassis, and puts the standard parts (mother board, video card) in the chassis. They then sell it to a reseller, rjtech.com, hypersonic-pc.com, etc. the resellers then put in the processor, memory, wifi card, optical drive, and hard drive, according to the customers wants and needs. by 'customizing' the lappy in this way, it becomes their computer, so to speak. that is why you see a bunch of notebook resellers that are all the compal cl56, but are named the aviator cx5, or Chembook 2056, or whatever. i don't know anything about bizcom, so i don't know if they know what they are doing in assembling a lappy, if they use quality parts, like solder, and wiring, etc. in summation, the reseller, bizcom, does, and also doesn't make the laptop, depending on how you look at it.

Thanks for the information. The "Bizcom" name is confusing me. I guess i'll e-mail the store and ask about the meaning behind associating the product their advertising with "Bizcom".

One more question. Does the CL56 automatically come with its own dvd/cd rom drive?
if you buy it barebones, i don't believe it does
