It seems only yesterday that having 512MB in a desktop (much less a notebook) is considered more than enough. But it seems that games are taking up more and more ram nowaday. I recently notice that the X1000 I'm using is getting really choppy after gaming for a few hours (City of heroes). A look at task manager shows over 600MB+ being used and the swapfile are being hit constantly (the 4200rpm HD certainly didn't help). Have we reach the point that you'll need over 512MB for a laptop? Should 1 GB be the minium now?

my desktop still has only 256 (2x128) and under Win2K or RedHat Pro 9.0 it is quite brisk, not lightning fast but preaty good for every day computing. Was a little choppy under XP especialy when trying to to listen to internet radio (via winmedia) and playing GTAIII (only got about 18fps with my 866mhz p4 and 4mb savage graphics). I am guessing that under xp the 512 should be fine for day to day living. An occasional game, or exessive multitasking would push you to the 1gb line. Or, if you are fortunate enough to have AMD64 FX, just stick a terabyte in there and you're covered for a lifetime.

hey i have a compaq (that should be enough but ill add) from 6 years ago, has 256 mb of RAM (pc133 btw), radeon 9200 (agp thou and 128 mb), my processor is 900 mhz AMD athlon(thats the name just athlon not ###+ or anything) o and my l1 cache is 64 mbs, l2 cache 256mbs. and it still runs fine. oh yea it runs on WINDOWS ME too. lolz
so far no major problems. however it has just recently showed the blue screen of death twice.... both times saying my system had become unstable (mabe too hot in hawaii) but yea no major problems heehee.
so now answering your question no 512 is not too little it think its enough untill 64 bit OSs and programs become staples
