Hey, I was looking for a review of the Cx5 by Hypersonic

Hey guys, my first post here. I'm pretty new with laptops etc, so bear with me please.

I was looking at the CX5 by Hypersonic. There don't seem to be very many reviews about it, as it seems Hypersonic's a pretty tiny company. It looks great though. Hopefully it'll work out for me... I was wondering what you guys think of it? atm, this is my set up... my budget is 2k. this roughly what i customized it as

80gig/7200 rpm
1.7 pentium M
Radeon 9700 (oh baby)
1 gig ram
only 1 screen that comes with
wireless 54mbs

Tell me what you think... it's mainly for online rpg's/action games... online 99% of the time... hardly ever do single player. I don't mind turning down the graphics TOO much, but will it run? I want it portable as well (6 1/2 lbs) because I'm carrying it to school/to classes/and back. This system keeps me at $1990. Any thoughts? Is Hypersonic good? anything better?

Being a nub of the laptop world here, whats the difference between SXGA/UXGA etc, all those types of screens... I've never ever understood the difference besides the fact that some apply to wide screen only? On that note, why is widescreen bad? doesn't it just cut out the sides of the game? it does that on my desktop...

Sorry if I'm being kinda stupid here I'll learn it all in time, right?

Thx for the input

Your system will play any game out at the moment with some features turned up! Unfortuantely, I don't think there is an 80GB HDD out that runs at 7200rpm.

Standard ratio screens 4:3 (like a normal TV screen) have 3 resolutions
XGA: largest font, least amount of pixels
SXGA: smaller font, many pixels which provide clearer picture
UXGA: smallest font which allows more info to fit on the screen and has clearest picture.

Then for widescreens with 16:10 ratio there are also 3 resolutions.
They are essentially the same as a standard screen except for the "W"
WXGA
WSXGA
WUXGA

first of all, you won't get an 80GB 7200rpm, the highest hypersonic has is a 60GB
second of all, you don't need a review of the CX5, just go over to notebook reviews, and read the numerous reviews of the CL56, its the same lappy
third, hypersonic is a great company, just a bit slow regarding shipping
fourth, the cl56 is great for games
fifth, widescreen is not bad, it is a preference. alot of the new games support widescreen formats
sixth, SXGA refers to the amount of pixels on a screen. the order from least to most is XGA, SXGA, UXGA. if there is a W in front of those, that means widescreen
seventh, what the hell is a nub? i am sure you mean noob
eighth, an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 128MB is the best gpu in mobile lappys, so yeah, it will handle games

Don't order from hypersonic unless you need a paintjob because other places such as ibuypower will offer the same quality and you'll receive it faster.

I realize you didn't say that but since he wrote that he was looking at the CX5 I came to the conclusion that he wished to order from Hypersonic.

Not true. They also have a very agressive "dead pixel" policy, they use Artic Silver thermal paste on their CPUs instead of a less effective solution, they offer a 30-day money back guarantee with no restock fee, and they offer a student discount.

i second that, even though I'm building my own

First I'd like to thank all of you guys for the great response.
Yes, I made a mistake, 60GB... its still ALOT of space

I checked Ibuypower.com
Their stuff looks great... is there any reason I shouldn't buy from them instead of hypersonic? Remember, I am bringing this to class, so it won't be shiny and pretty I know I know, I wish it could be too, but I'd get thrown out or beaten with really pointy sticks.

So from what I understand, UXGA is the best, in terms of pixels... per inch... or whatever. It has the most. Will that slow down gaming? If so, whats the best to have?

Also, will either the hypersonic or battalion be loud? It can't have fans fizzing and twirling really loudly.

A nub=noob.

Also... I must know... are they ugly? either one of them? In RL, not just from the pictures. I don't want some monsterously ugly thing sitting in front of me like a dell or god forbid an hp.

Thanks for your time, you guys are amazing

I looked at the Cl56...

I think I've come to realize that these are all the same laptops, and its really a matter of the company and aesthetics...

Am I right? Wrong? Stoopid?

Ibuypower is cheaper than hypsersonic and you get the same quality components. However, you can buy a no dead pixel insurance at Hypersonic for $50 that insures your screen won't have any dead pixels. However, if hypersonic finds that you have dead pixels on your screen, they have to get a new screen and this will extend your waiting time even more. With ibuypower, I believe the max number of dead pixels you can have before getting a new screen is between 3-5 and most people can deal with that.
Hypersonic installs AS on their cpus but it's no big deal at all. Many CL56s have been ordered from ibuypower with no dead pixels or AS on the cpu and the lappy still runs very cool.
Forget about the student discount hypersonic offers. They told me I'd get a 3% discount after waiting a month for a response from them.

the cl56 isn't ugly. It only weights 6.5lbs and has a heigth of 1.2 inches. It's really small. and it is dead silent. Both the ibuypower and hypersonic will be quiet because they are the same lappy.
A UXGA screen will slow down gaming because the high resolution stresses the video card. However, you can scale your resolution down to make the Uxga screen work at a smaller resolution and then gaming will be perfect.

he's new... unbelievably, no ones has given him the lay of the land yet.

oasa, the compal is the ODM that makes the laptop you are looking at that is resold by hypersonic / ibuypower / many others. their model is called the "compal cl56." hypersonic sells it as the "aviator cx5," ibuypower as the "battalion CL," etc. you are right when you realize that these are basically all the same laptops.

here is an ODM explanation:
http://www.powernotebooks.com/Name_Brand.php3

here is a page with some popular ODMs and the corresponding resellers (thank Titanman):
http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=22187

if you scroll down to the Compal CL56 you will see a list of vendors and their webpages.

you're right to have inferred that the change in prices at the particular vendors is just due their differing service, brand name, etc rather than actually different laptops. if you search for "compal cl56 review" on these forums you can get in-depth analysis on your model from people who have bought from specific vendors. it's actually a very popular one, at least for an ODM machine not sold by the major companies.

Uh..

Check out Resellerratings maybe?

Hypersonic: http://www.resellerratings.com/seller2081.html

IBuyPower: http://www.resellerratings.com/seller2001.html

Both have great ratings, however read some reviews..Hypersonic I read each and every review lol, all 9 pages, and Over 60 of the 85 are "Very Satisfied".. For Ibuypower, I dont know, I wont go reading 31 or something pages on a computer I'm not ordering from :P

Ibuypower origanaly was the company I wanted to buy from, but I read my reviews and did my research, and it seems as if they have really bad and rude tech support (pfft go read some hypersonic reviews, they upgrade parts and send you new parts, even upgrade to overnight shipping if order is delayed sometimes for FREE. i think i read ibuypower is rude and makes you pay for the shipping and all that stuff you get it ... o.o)

Ibuypower is much less money, and that's the type of service you get, I believe.. I'm gonna read the first 3 pages of reviews for ibuypower and see if it's worth it o.o

Reason I posted this: I want my next lappy to be a hypersonic

One thing about Hypersonic though is they have a rep for taking forever to build and ship a system. If you ask them, they'll say they've mostly worked out these issues. However, 2 days after I placed my order, they pushed my expected ship date back by 2 weeks (?!?!), presumably due to a high volume of orders. This doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

My expected ship date is still 3 weeks away, so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for now. Who knows - maybe they'll surprise me yet!
