I remember reading about a device like this for children. Parent wear one part child wear other, if they were separated by more than a dozen or so metres an alarm would sound.

Slogos,

for about $35 bucks you can get "Child Guard"

here's the description:

Worn by the child, the cartoon animal-shaped Child Guard transmitter sends a constant signal to the receiver, which is held by the adult. The signal is adjustable -- from a distance of 6 to 30 feet, so when the child goes beyond the set distance, the adult's receiver starts to beep, letting you know that the child is starting to wander off.

Frequencies adjust themselves automatically to alert the proper receiver if more than one adult is in the same area using the Child Guard monitoring system.

Simple and easy to use compact wireless design.
Child friendly design -- transmitter is hidden in a plastic toy.
Has a rotating dial that you can adjust anywhere between 6 and 30 feet.
Transmitter can be attached by buckle, to clothes, or worn as a necklace.
Suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
Lithium batteries included.
Easy to read instructions.
Retail Price $35.00

If you don't mind the cartoonish Xmiter it comes in green, pink or yellow. just throw it in you laptop bag its a cheap solution.

Otherwise your looking for something like the Caveo which is $99

I think Sager was considering adding the fingerprint scanner to a future version. I don't know if anything was ever finalized. Regardless, is there a way for the end-user to add this? The more I think about it, the more I want a security system of some sort (and a cable around a desk isn't gonna cut it).

for anyone interested in the caevo or Targus's Defcon MDP Security card. I conviced them to ship me a demo unit. I post a review once I get it and put it thru its paces.

We have two problems here, securing your data and securing your hardware. In my mind, the best solution would be to have a small internet capable OS in the BIOS (password protected, of course) that would phone home whenever the modem or ethernet adapter was attached to the internet. All the other solutions are software that can be easily removed by wiping the drive, which is what the theives will do anyway when they can't login to the machine. That will remove your sensitive data, but you are still out a couple thousand bucks for the hardware.

It would be great if Clevo or Sager could get with Phoenix on this. They have a BIOS that will run a small protected OS that is capable of holding your initial configuration for easy restore.

Another method would be to have another method of booting the machine. If you boot it with the power button, you get straight into Windows with the capability of getting on the internet without having to logon. This would also hide most of the harddrive, thereby protecting your data. However, if you boot the machine with your thumb on the fingerprint reader, you will get the real OS, the one you use everyday, which will also give you access to your files. Using this scenario, theives would be less likely to reformat the machine since it works fine, and your tracking software could very quietly reports its location when they get on the internet.

I like the BIOS option myself.

I thought of another way to do this with an OS. Perhaps you could have another user on your machine with the same username, but a blank password.

What is the first thing you do when presented with a login screen that already has a username typed in? You press enter to see if the password is set.

If you could have two users with the same username, then you could protect your data using the login with the password, but theives would be able to get on the internet without formatting the drive using no password. You can even have your tracking software only load if no password is used.

OS's don't allow for this right now (usernames must be unique), but maybe it could be a feature to add.

Look At Computrace

Check out the stats at Computrace from Absolute software. This utility can't be wiped, and calls Computrace every time the computer trys to access the internet. If you report the unit as stolen Computrace pings the computer and gets it location. Search warrants are then issued to the isp, then to the address where the computer is.

From the FAQ:

Quote:
The Computrace Agent, which powers the ComputracePlus service is a small software client and is as tamper-resistant as a disk-based utility can be.
Same problem here. If the disk is wiped, the software is wiped with it. Most theives wipe the harddrives anyway, since they only want the laptop itself, and that is the easiest way to get around a password.

Still, it looks pretty interesting and not that expensive. Good find!

Last I heard, Computrace can survive over 100 HDD wipes.
