Can anyone recomend a good 20 gig external/pcmcia drive?

Ok, I was originally going to get a 60 gig drive in my sager 5670, but then decided that I will really only be using about 20 gigs of it (at the most) for programs, but still want some extra storage space for movies, music, and that kind of stuff. So, I have decided to get a 10 or 20 gig drive (probably 20). Could someone please recomend a nice 20 gig usb2, pcmcia (which I would love but can't find) or firewire drive that would work well on the 5670. I know that the firewire port is not powered, so I would either need to use the ps2 tap or an ac adaptor (doesn't really matter to me, but the fewer cords the better ).

As usual, thanks for any and all help.

It all depends on what your price range is. If money is no object I would go with an apple IPOD. Yes, I know this is an MP3 player but it also functions as a hdd. Since it can store data and function as an mp3 player I think it's worth some consideration. (it is expensive though)

I have had good luck with Bason Computers in buying three 2.5" HDs (enclosures with HD's already inside), as well as one 3.5" enclosure.

All are very nice, and the smaller 2.5" enclosures come with PS/2 power taps. One of the models I have is a 40GB/5400 Toshiba drive inside a small case that is both USB 2.0 and Firewire.

Their website is not the best, but the people are friendly and courteous, plus USPS shipping is free and UPS is normal. E-mail them with specifics (i.e. if you want an IBM vs. Toshiba HD, etc).

It is a free country, and a free world (well, some of it anyway) but you're going to get a fine machine like the 5670 and ONLY get a 20GB HDD, and THENNN you're going to get an additional external accessory to lug around, so you'll have space for movies, music, etc? The external HDD will give you the option to plug in directly to other machines, rather than network from your laptop, but other than that, I don't see the point. I bought my Sager so I could get RID of the several other desktops I had around, and always have everything with me whereever I want to take it. Also, I've never had or needed more than 30GB of HDD, and often made do with less, but now that I've had a single 60GB for a month I only have 44% free space left, and there are no movies and only a little music on it. When your 20GB internal runs out and you buy a larger drive, then you've spent double or more and have a leftover internal. Just a thought.

Oops, thought I forgot to say something in my first post. I was going to get a 60, but have opted for the 40. I also do video encoding, and about 15 of the remaining 20 for that. I had a 60 gig sager 5660 for about 2 months, and while I did have about 35 gigs filles, about 15 of that was movies, full disk isos, music, and that kind of stuff. Also, since I am going to college, some type of usb storage would be nice so I can plug it in at the lab. Also, I have an e755 (toshiba ppc) that has a usb post on it and supports mass storage devices, such as external usb hard drives (which are great for holding movies for that thing. Anyways, a 40+20 option appears to suit my need.

Keep the ideas comming. Right now I am considering the 20 gig 5400 rpm usb drive from the site that myrkat posted about.

Well, my 20 gig external usb 2.0 drive came today, and it works great. I ordered from Bason Computer, and am glad I did. I did have one complaint. On their site they let you state if you think that a price is too high, and then state why, and what you would be willing to pay. Well, I did, and said that I would pay 100. When the drive came, it was charged to me at 125, so I had to get in a debate with the people on the phone over this price (they didn't want to budge, even though the web site said it would not be sent if they did not agree on my price). Eventually we settled at 110, which isn't really a bad price, all things considered.

it's the prettiest of the pretty

Lacie recently introducted the Data Bank which is an external bus powered USB 2.0 or firewire 20gb drive. It is shaped of the from of a sliver bar and is encased within a magnesium shell. it has uber sex appeal.

I want a Lacie but in a Gold Bar.

Problem with the LaCie is there is no POWER for it, it relies totally on the BUS power, so most all laptops are stuck using the USB connection (except the handful of macs with a powered FW bus on the laptop).

Interesting idea, but F.A. Porsche's designs lack life (that's the shortest description I can give). Wonder if he had a hand at designing those ugly Tumi cases from the other thread...
