XPS or Area51m?

Thread Starter
Ok guys. So I am on the verge of getting a new lappie. The final hours are approaching until I make my decision. I searched far and wide through the threads and could not find exactly what I am looking for, so here goes the question.

Should I purchase an Area51m or a Dell XPS? Dell has a sale right now at 15% off XPS systems. This is what Dell has going for it that beats Alienware. WUXGA display, Dual channel memory, cheaper with the 15% off deal. Alienware has the awesome look to it, and the great customer support, but only single channel memory and WSXGA display. Also, Alienware has the user-upgradeable graphics but they are more expensive in the long run.

Please, unbiased comments only. Thank you.

Edit: I can live without the dual channel memory, but I am really concerned about the quality of the WSXGA compared to the WUXGA LCD screen.
By the way, Dell has a 8x dual layer burner compared to Alienware's 4x burner.

I would chose sxvga over Wuxga any given day. If you want unbiased opinions then this might not be the right place to ask for everyone here owns a 9100/XPS and they will almost always tell you that 9100/XPS is better than AW (even in my opinion AW would be like burning your money, when you can save 100-1000 for a more powerfull system from Dell sure it doesnt look as good as AW but i choose performance over looks. AW has good looks but 9100/XPS is just as good if not better. My 2 cents.

I was in the same boat just 2 weeks ago. My decision came down to the area 51m or the XPS. I chose the XPS because of the following reasons. 1) Dual channel memory, 2) better display, 3) upgradeable graphics w/ Dells tech support to do it for you 4) all of this at a better price 5) Dell's a huge company, lots of tech support and very good warranty coverage options and since I have made my purchase I can honestly tell you I couldn't be more happy. Everything runs great, not 1 dead pixel on my screen, very minimal light leakage, super fast processor, great 7200 rpm hard drive, and it took just 10 days from the day of ordering for it to get to me. I would recommend the Dell strickly based on my findings, no bias involved, only facts. Whatever you choose, please reply to this post so that I know which route you went and how things go, I'm interested to see. Good Luck!!

The Alienware will have better build quality, as well as better tech support, but the iXPS has a slight edge on it in performance and price. I would go with the Alienware, because as I have said before, it is a sexy beast.

I never have seen in person or used the A51m but all I can tell you is that I absolutly love my XPS. It plays everything I throw at it. Not only games but apps for work. Good stuff...

there are a couple of threads on the AW forums that say that the area 51m2 is not going to be user "upgradeable" because the motherboard on the area 51m's that came shipped with the 9600 graphics card cannot support the new 9700 card

http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=28820

http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=22492&page=5

if this in fact turns out to be true, i think it says a lot about alienware's marketing practices

a lot of people bought the area51m2 on the premise that they would be able to upgrade their video cards easily

keep in mind this needs to be confirmed by some of the more veteran members of the alienware forums so until then i will withhold any judgement

Wow they really just make it harder and harder at this rate.
