Isntalling external mouse

I bought a microsoft wireless optical mouse and I can't get it too work with my dell 8600

I installed the software, then plugged in the mouse. Didn't work. The touchpad still works fine though.

So I uninstalled the touchpad drivers. Still, the mouse doesn't work. So I uninstalled and re-installed the optical mouse drivers again.... Still not working.

I really have no idea what to do!

Wireless. Perhaps the base and mouse aren't connecting. Press the 'Connect" buttons on both of them?

I don't know how to tell. I press the buttons, the lights flash. Don't know if that means it's connected or not.

I don't think connectivity is the issue here though. The wireless keyboard that came with it works great.

And you have made sure there are fresh batteries in the mouse? (I know this sounds obvious and patronising, but really a lot of people forget).
