Your recovery dvd should work fine to initialize your new hard drive.

I did the same install as you. The easy way is to buy an external case for your old drive and use it for extra storage. I can't recall if I swapped the drives before or after the transfer(too much Bud!), but I used Acronis True Image ( the MigrateEasy part of the program) and USB'd the entire drive, operating system, partitions and all programs in one shot. Took about 3 1/2 hours, but didn't lose a single setting. Pretty Slick!

so basically u connected ur old hard drive ( which u put in some kinda external case ) and then usb'd the info to the new HDD...... but i dont wanna make /get the external case....ill just be removing old hdd from the current slot and putting it in the style bay.. and ill put the new hdd in place of the old hdd in the proper slot... how do i transfer stuff without making any external cases / using any external media and by using only DVD-RW / CD-RW ( if needed ) ?/

thanks much for ur replies..

I don't see why Acronis would not work here.
1. take new HDD and put in style bay.
2. Use MigrateEasy to put everything on new HDD
3. Swap Drives
No XP reinstall. No settings being changed. Doesn't get much easier than this, unless I'm missing something!

swap drives as a last step???? hmm..... this is a dumb question but it is possible to just put the New hdd in the main slot and the old 4200 in the style bay and still use "migrate easy" right????

I am not familiar with how the Toshiba "sees" the Style Bay drive. I am assuming it "sees" a slave drive. If you put the new drive in the case, jumpered to master, it's gonna try to boot from that drive. These drives have a switch for master/slave options. You may be able to get it to boot from the style bay in the start-up options. I don't know! The real pros for Toshiba are at http://forums.compuserve.com/gvforum...Toshiba&loc=us

Yeah, you can boot from the Style bay drive.

i got acrnis true image ( v 7) but i cant find this "migrate easy" option.. can anyone temme where it is??

EDIT: also, are there different thicknesses / sizes for hdds?? if so , which one will work on my laptop ??( for the hitachi 7200 rpm one )

My Acronis has 5 options including Migrate Easy. The Hitachi 60gb 7200 rpm will fit just fine. For Migrate Easy go here; h**p://dl.yffw.com/yifan/PowerUtilities-2004.rar

EDIT : my acronis has the following options:

1) create image
2) restore image
3) explore image
4) unplug image
5) disk clone
6) add new disk
7) schedule task

Sorry, try this one (it's working) http://sonic2k.com/?apps. Scroll about 9 or 10 down on the page. Looks like you can get the entire Security Suite or the separate programs. On your copy of Acronis, it's either option 5 or 6. Just start the program and read the instructions.
