This Is Bull$hit...

It's been a while since I have posted (studying for Boards and all)...I just got off the phone with AW tech support and was informed that the ATI 9700 will not be offered as an upgrade option. Our motherboards (rev 2.0 and lower) will not support the card. The tech tells me that I can upgrade to the 5700...thanks buddy but you can keep that card. When I pressed him about the future upgradeability of our laptops...he said he was unsure. Follow me though...if our lappies cannot support a 9600/5600 to 9700 upgrade then what is the likliehood that the next gen card will be supported? I feel completely screwed by AW and now I have a non-upgradeable $4000 brick. So then I ask about a mobo upgrade and was told that it was not being offered either. I expressed my dissatisfaction and lodged a complaint and I urge everyone to do so and for someone to get a petition or something going so that we can demand some sort of solution. I smell...class action lawsuit!

I AM SO UPSET RIGHT NOW!!!

yeah...I'm starting to hear the pangs of irritation as well....

oh my goodness, so the area 51m's much marketed upgradeable graphics card is BS because the motherboard can't support the newer cards? I would say that's false advertising on the part of AW. Sorry to hear that, i hope AW does right by you all and does something about it

wow, that seriously sucks.

Follow me on this guys...and gals.

Why did Alienware Gross 150 Million last year?

Because of you, me, and us!

With that being said, they owe us. Not money. But to fulfill their promise of upgradable graphics. Nowhere in their advertising does it say you will only be allowed to upgrade one time.

Shoot, I just spent $3200+ on one of their laptops that has a 9700 card. My understanding is that my laptop is done! I will not be able to upgrade to a newer card when it comes out.

That my friends is blatant false advertising. Is it not?

AW really needs to get their act together once and for all!

I really do love their laptops. However, they are overpriced. Fact!

I bought this thing believing in there slogan. Upgradable graphics card. That is the ONLY reason I spent much more than I would have on a laptop.

If that is true, and I believe it is. I will no longer support Alienware. I'm actually thinking of selling this off on Ebay, where I'm quite confident it'll bring most of what I paid.

Do you think that post like this, and reading many of the online reviews will turn away prospective buyers?

If I would have read that the new AW laptops were not upgradeable (VGA cards), I am positive I would have bought something else for a whole let less.

Yes, I'm upset. I dont like being deceived.

Yes, I will sign a petition.

is it possible that the tech guy that notebookgamer spoke with is well to put it nicely, "misinformed"?

i was thinking of getting an area 51m2 myself but now.......

if it is true, wonder if "class action lawsuit" will get AW's attention real quick
post #7 of 72
I will sign a petition too cause if I cant upgrade mine to the latest chip I WILL BE PISSED!
As much as I love this Area 51m that I have, I will probably return it if I cannot upgrade the processor or anything else. I didn't pay $1000 more than I should have, just to have the Alienware name on my notebook.

Everyone needs to call AW and voice their dissatisfaction and lodge a formal complaint and perhaps then it will cause them to do something...

roftlol, glad i passed on 51

I'd rather have my GeForce FX Go 5600 than some crappy Intel 'extreme' graphics. More like an 'extreme'-ly cheap way of putting out a pre Area 51m laptop.

Note: The Sentia was put out long before the Area51m. To the dissapoint to many, this was no Area 51m replacement because they had to wait abit longer for a real gaming laptop from Alienware.

If I were you guys, I would be thinking one thing: RIOT!

Just kidding.

You guys should be pissed. I was going to buy the Alienware because of its upgradability (not enough money). Its something that is advertized all over their website, and is appearantly false advertizing in light of this new developement. I wish you all success in dealing with Alienware; heck they may give you all free motherboards, or even a motherboard and a new graphics card.

Is the Nvidia 5700 card inferior to the Radeon 9700? I see that it is more expensive compared to the Radeon 9600 but it seems that most people prefer ATI over Nvidia.

Just trying to look on the bright side that I could upgrade to the 5700 which is one more upgrade than any other notebook.

I had the same problem with the older Area-51M

I had the same problem with the older Area-51s, I was told that I could have HT enable on my mother board and when I got the machine, it did not have the HT enable I would have had to sent it in to get the Area-51m upgrade and that would have been 2-3 weeks to do that and get it back to me. I order a system that said they would have it but they lied to me. and that mayed me

If the tech speaks truthfully, this is going to be a real black eye on AW.

Thats y you cannot buy 9600? from the uk anymore maybe when you ppl purchased people where "unsure what motherboard and gfx card" are compability but now im glad they took the 9600 away from the uk and made me get 9700 . really i wouldnt complain about your pc. Computer's hardware is changing everyday like withen a month a new pc could be obsilete.

Pc in my view r kinda of a scam.
#1 You pay 3000$ for a Top range pc
#2 One month later its not!

so you gotta pay more for the best lol!

Hmm i saw this before and though its was untrue but no wit has been confrimed I am highly upset i had pegged alienware for better than that! This truely disheartens me! I realy wanted the 9700 eventually now they say we can't up-grade at all why offer an upgradeable graphics card that you can't upgrade!!!
they better fix this fast or things might get ugly!
