(Also because of some brand new guy's single post) I'd hate to have you guys in my resistance squad after the aliens take over!
You must be a jackass...check my join date idiot...I've been on these forums a year before you. I've been studying for boards and have been away for a while. Now that that is out of the way...
The tech support whom I spoke with transferred me to his supervisor who insisted that it was not going to be available to people with mobo rev 2.0 or lower. For those who think that just because they are using the same sis648 mobo that it is all the same then ask those who couldn't use the speed of pc3200 RAM with their rev 1.0 mobo. So now that jamaster has spoke with a few people I went ahead and did the live chat deal and got a very interesting answer...see for yourself:
Ignacio Rodriguez-Trelles: Hi, my name is Ignacio Rodriguez-Trelles. How may I help you?
You: Hello...there is a lot of rumors and misinformation going around about the ATI 9700 card and its upgradeability. Can I upgrade to the ATI 9700?
Ignacio Rodriguez-Trelles: Yes, you can but we're currently out of stock.
You: I was told last night by a tech supervisor that my mobo rev 2.0 would not support the upgrade. Is there any truth to this?
Ignacio Rodriguez-Trelles: If you have one of the first motherboards, you might experience a problem with the card. You might have to flash the BIOS to fix it.
You: This is good news but I was told something completely different by a Manuel Roldan Question Reference #040622-000828 last night. Why is that?
You: I was informed by him and his supervisor that the 9700 is completely incompatible with my system
Ignacio Rodriguez-Trelles: It can run but it has been having incompatibilties. I wouldn't get the card until we clear that out.
You: and that no further research and development was being done on this matter and that my only option is the 5700
You: so is there work being done to clear this up and when do you think i should expect a resolution by (estimate)
Ignacio Rodriguez-Trelles: I don't have a deadline yet, but it should be relatively soon for a lot of people are looking forward to that upgrade.
You: yes and a lot of people will be extremely pissed if it doesn't happen
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do I know what all of this means? No...do I know that I was misinformed...probably and hopefully. Do I know that I have "boards" coming up? Yes. So, it was nice posting here again after my first hiatus, but alas I am off again and will probably check back in a couple of months...glad to see some familiar names still here albeit only a few...

PS: thanks AW for confusing and upsetting a lot of people!

I dunno guys, I think you are all just taking the word of one guy for a bit too much. It seems that you have to ask AW a few times over before you get the right answers.

We'll just have to wait and see.

I have chatted with a few agents in the past, and unless your getting this from "Warner" take it with a grain of salt.

Well I think they should all tell you the same thing every time

K guys I called them this morning and whoever said this in the first place is mistaken as long as the chip is AGP 8x are motherboards can support it! Unless it was like 512 MB those are his exact words.

*Whew* that is a huge relief.

Of course like everything in the Alienware world, we will never absolutely know unless we actually see it.

This Manuel Roldan Question Reference #040622-000828 has given us quite a scare. Their misinformation almost got me to riot.

First, let me say I understand why you guys reacted the way you did, but...

The laptops are different than desktops, and Alienware is doing something unique with the upgradable graphics modules, so there's bound to be occasional issues. When Alienware gets new hardware, they test it thoroughly to be sure it not only works well, but is stable.

When they have an issue with hardware, it takes time for them to get solutions worked out with their hardware manufacturers because this is AW specific, not industry wide. No company out there works like Alienware does to find a solution.

Someone mentioned the hyperthreading issue with the early A51m. The motherboard manufacturer told Alienware in early development that the board would support hyperthreading, so they put that information in their advertising and on their website. In fact when they got the production versions of the motherboard, hyperthreading worked, but it caused instability that was unacceptable to AW so they released the first versions with ht disabled. AW worked with their mobo manufacturer to come up with a solution so that in fact all A51m's were HT capable as they advertised. Unfortunately the solution involved swapping mobo's in some versions, and adding hardware and new bios versions to others, but Alienware did make sure that everyone that purchased an A51m with an ht processor was able to take advantage of that feature, at no cost to the customers.

It sounds to me that there were issues with the 9700 module in regards to the early mobo version in question, and AW has found a solution through testing in a new bios version. It's unfortunate these things take time to iron out, but Alienware is the only company that offers these modules, so there is little they can do but work out the issues as quickly as possible. Would you prefer they sell you a module that causes issues?

I'm sure due to the fact that some people are still whining about the ht issue despite it's resolution, that AW has decided not to release new hardware for laptops until they're totally confident they won't have issues like this in the future.

It's also known that when hardware is first introduced, Alienware gets huge orders for new systems with the components. Alienware sells the limited number of units they get early on in systems they know are stable and compatible while they run their testing programs on earlier versions of the other hardware. It's unfortunate that some feel upgraders should be first in line, but for many reasons that's not the way it works out.

I've been a customer of Alienware since 1999, and despite occasional issues that cause people to go ballistic, I've never personally dealt with a computer company that continues to work with their customers until they're satisfied, if that's possible.

I will agree with you though, that communication is key, and the responses you get to these questions should be consistent. I know Ignacio, so anything he says I'd rely on.

I just don't get this. Are you happy that this could be true? You've posted on the other thread "HA HA". What's up with that Archalien? Are you expressing glee for other folk's alleged misfortune? I'm not trying to harp on you about it bro. Hell, I'm not even trying to flame you. I just want to know what motivated you to cross post such mirth in a forum for A51 when your signature states you own a Sentia.

I think the Sentia's a great buy, but I needed a portable desktop for photoshop editing, so I chose the A51 as a "desktop replacement". It fits my needs better. If ever I go to the Sentia forum and start trolling with "na na na", then please feel free to ridicule me for purchasing an A51. Otherwise, consider the fact that there are quite a few adults that use these forums and have no interest in reading this kind of juvenile tripe.

If I misinterpreted your intentions, then please accept my apologies and disregard this post.

No Bud, you got it down. ArchAlien is an ass and seems to enjoy gloating... Don't mind him, I just stopped paying attention after a while...

Well I sure picked a good time to be away from an internet connection for a few days :-/

*Deep Breath*

Once again, the Mob mentality has ruled the human race...I cringe to think what REAL Aliens think of us when they look down.

Let's all reflect on the outcome of this thread: No One Knows Jack Sh&%! Just like BEFORE this thread was started. Until we get official word on the Alienaware website or from JuanG over here, everything (unfortunately even from the mouth of Technicians and Customer Service people at AW) we hear is pure speculation.

Now move along...nothing to see here...and take your pitchforks and torches with you.

-Craig

PS
Total BS posters with no particular intent to ADD to the conversation here (and you know who you are) should know better....MUCH better since they're always the ones complaining to me about other people's behavior.

I was talking about kushalc, guy. The only one AW seems to be misleading is the people who keep calling them up and misinterpreting a "hardware reworking delay" (which was posted here about 2 weeks ago) for a total cancellation of the 9700.

p.s.- thanks for the jackass and idiot thing. Now that you know I wasn't talking about you, how does it feel to have slung such words at a total stranger?
Good on ya, Craig!

All I know is 2 weeks ago, it was posted that someone called AW and found out that they were reworking the card to be compatible with older mobos.

This week, some first poster calls AW and is told that it won't be happening. Shortly thereafter, someone else calls AW and is told that they are not sure due to certain incompatabilities with the older mobos "which are being worked on".

Instantly, a huge flood of posts and a buttload of new threads begin, saying OMG, WOT DOES THIS MEAN? THIS SUXORZ! and BLOODY DEATH TO ALIENWARE!

Plus, I got labeled a jackass and an idiot for my troubles.

It's both sad and funny.

There IS a way to find out for sure. Find two people who live close together; one that has a new laptop with a 9700, and one with an older laptop with a 5600/9600. Do a videocard swap and see if it works on the older laptop with new drivers.

dude... Get a DELL... j/k... no, Craig is right. We don't know whats going to happen so lets just relax and wait it out. I myself have heard that the 9700 WILL be available for upgrades, but they are low on stock so they haven't put it up yet. I would say (assumption) in 30 days or less, it will be available for sale...
