Dell Warrenty Upgrade to 4yrs *deal* -ugly secret (for Dell)

There was a thread with a link that offered an upgrade from "1 year mail in warranty" to a "4 year on site warranty" for $140 if you did it within 45 days of purchase. I used the link even though I had received my laptop about 65 days ago and low and behold, I received a call from Dell within 48 hours saying the listing was a mistake, but Dell would honor the price. I played dumb and thanked the rep and I now have the 4-year on-site warranty. If the link is still good, I would highly suggest filling out the form and waiting for Dell to contact you. I do not think there is anything cross-referencing the purchase date. Seems to be one hell of a deal! And no, I don't feel guilty.

Take care and good luck,

Chaz

Seriously

the majority in here will get a new lappie within the next 2 years. That's the avg. life of my laptops. In fact, the technology will be outdated within 1.5 years.

Whether or not "the majority" will get a new lappy, thanks to Chaz, nonetheless. Good lookin' out.

true. but many people buy laptops for college or some other personal reason and if you want it to last 4 years, the peace of mind knowing you won't get screwed that 4th year with a fried motherboard or whatever is easily worth that $140.

I bourght 3 year-mail in at first, then I found out 4 years at home is cheaper than 3 year mail-in. Why not?

Here's the link

Here is the original link: http://www.dell.com/html/us/segment..._step_form.html
check the box that says you have had the computer for less than 45 days (I thought they would call foul-I've had mine for a couple of months, but they were very accomodating). And while I agree there is a point of diminishing returns, $140 is worth the risk that I will have a new laptop in two years (my kids will probably have this one, but I sill have to pay to have it fixed!).

Chaz,
Yes, thanks for the link.

Guys,
I'm even thinking 'bout getting the extended warranty. I figure, with minor upgrades down the road (cpu, hdd, etc.), i can squeeze out over 3 year's worth. So the $70 per year for the warranty (1 years free, 2 years paid) does seem decent. However, my MO has been to get a new lappie every ~1.6 years (i've owned 7 thusfar).

I posted about this in the other thread:

But, do think it's stupid to TRY to get this.. even though I am over the 45 days. I have had my lappy for about 6 months now. I am sure they would find out and not let me.. but do you think its even worth the try?
everything is worth a try. i'm on my third attempt, this time with my rep. he wasn't that cool though so I'm willing to bet he won't do it. If someone else was able to drop the warranty like I want to and add the 4 yr for $140 then so should I.

that link above doesnt work.
but in the thread they have the link
http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=27876
i went and i did it. I said my lap was less then 45 Days, Let see what happens.

I Placed and order for my laptop on jan 28 and go it on feb 5 so is like 6 months old ordery let c what happens. wish me luck guys.

yah laptop dont last long but think about selling on. People would buy ur laptop knowing that it has a warranty still. so if ur batter is going dead they can just replace it.

Good question. does dell replaces battery that cant hold a charge. lets say i have this for about a year and i call up and tell them that my battery cant hold a charge do u think they will send me a new one (to sell this is a great Pointer)?

Bad Link and here's how

I don't know what happened to the link I posted, but as mentioned above, the original link still works.

As for the technique to get the upgrade over 45 days (mine was 60 days):
*check the under 45 day box on the website
*don't call and demand the warranty, let them call you. They have a different group that responds to the warranty. I received a call within 48 hours. The site said I would receive an email, but I never did before the rep from Dell called me.
*When they call, just give the info requested-they will ask for payment info. They never mentioned that mine was over 45 days and I never brought it up.
*I received the confirmation and my profile info was updated to the new warranty. Total price w/ tax was $150.55

Get it while you can and post your experiences.

Good Luck!

I guess its a great deal if you didn't get the warranty but what if you were a dufus like me who already purchased the 3yrs on site, how do get around canceling and getting the cheaper 4yr on site. I haven't received my lappy yet, its due to arrive tomorrow 6/24.
