Got My Ferrari 3200!

post #1 of 32

Yeah baby! Just arrived today!

Anyways... I get what they mean when it's viewing angles really aren't that great, especially vertically. Unless you're in the "sweet spot" the colour does "fade" or whatever you call it. But, being my first laptop it's not really a big deal...

I live in Toronto and ended up ordering from Sonexpc.com seemed fine I guess, shipped out a day after sending in the money, so that was nice. That was last friday, the 18th, todays the 23rd so 5 days pretty good, lol. Avoided 7% PST by ordering out of the province though, lol.

I'm just in the midst of installing updates and drivers and stuff so I really don't have much to say yet...

As far as I can tell the keyboard is great and I really am not having any troubles typing on it... The curved thing I dunno, seems the same to me not really noticeable though I've not really typed on many other laptops so I wouldn't know what to compare it to... Looks pretty sleek though and I don't have many complaints there I'll do a dead pixel test in a bit, but haven't ntoiced any as of yet.

Edit: Cruddy... I've got one dead pixel It's red and in the top left corner so it's not noticeable though, I can really only see it on a white background and wouldn't notice it normally.

Setup went pretty quick, with XP pro installed and all just had to load it up. Acer doesn't install much crap on it, so I'm not complaining. Yep, anything else I should be looking out for?

Update: Alright I've got most of the basics installed and just running with it for now... Turned off the auto-ferrari wall paper, though it is pretty cool it's a built in Calendar as well, lol. But... I don't like it, haha. I've taken some pics, but gimme a l'il while to stick 'em up 'cause i've got some other junk to do...

Speakers, I guess they're laptop speakers so can't really expect much. Though, being as it is my first laptop it doesn't seem TOO bad... You can hear things properly and all... Bass is almost non-existant though, lol.

Touchpad is nice and all, though I'm not really used to using it and I prefer a mouse. The buttons seems quite responsive though, the 4 button thing does work fine though... letting me scroll side to side and up and down...

The left palm rest does get warm though, the harddrive is there so I guess that's kind of expected.

The fan really hasn't gone on except when i've restarted it the few times to get all the things installed, so that's good. Though, even when on it's really not all that loud, doesn't bug me at all. The DVD-RW drive isn't very loud and when I installed Warcraft 3 on it, didn't really notice it, more quiet than my comps CD drive anyway.

Yeah... Don't know what else to say about it, seems like a pretty sweet system to me

Update 2:
Battery life under general use is about 3 hours, give or take 5 mins.
Battery life while playing NFSU gave me about 1.5 hours give or take 10 mins or so.

Update 3:
Ran aquamark 3 on the comp and finally noticed some fan noise, lol. I was running NFSU and Wc3 neither of which generated ANY fan noise at all... Either that or the sound playing from the speakers, which I have set at the lowest possible without muting... totally covers it up.

More on heat: The left palm rest is still quite warm, though no warpage of any stickers or w/e yet... Though with the tests and stuff the middle near the LCD, around the power button, has gotten about as warm as the harddrive... Though no one touches that so... Touchpad and keyboard are experiencing a little heat, nothing bad though i'll say just a touch above room temperature 25 celsius?, I guess it's the heat dissipation so it's being spread around... The right palm rest is still quite cool though.

Score with the Omega drivers with no overclock, just what it came with.
GFX = 3171
CPU = 7504
Total = 26186

Just to compare I did an aquamark3 on my desktop, 2.4 ghz p4 w/ 9700 pro.
GFX = 4779
CPU = 7474
Total = 36207

Saweeeet congrats!! dude wish I had one *as he wimpers in envy* give us a full review and some pics

cool - let us know how things go. Just test everything as soon as possible - LAN, all the usb ports, modem, etc, make sure everything works.
Dead pixels happen, and if it's not noticeable then you're okay. Hope everything works well.

Hey man, congrats.

One question: What are the default clocks @ radeon 9700 (in ferrari 3200)
post #7 of 32
based on 2 other ferrari3200 owners, their 9700 came default clocked at 450-460 core 210 mem

452.25 and 209.25

That's the default.
post #9 of 32
can you test batter life on this thing as I was hearing differnt times from people.
post #10 of 32
yeah because i'm really confused with everyone giving their different claims...maybe do some basic web/word kinds of stuff and see when the battery gets below 5/10% left, then watch a DVD and see when the same thing happens, and finally loop the 3dMark01/03 demo and see when the low-battery warning pops up. i just recited that from a magazine article so bear with the slight idiocy.

Acer Ferrari 3200

I've had mine about two weeks and what a honey!!!!!! It does seem to get a little "hot" on my lap tho. The best part is the race car lap when she first turns on. I could have used a whole lot more of that.

Question. How does the port replicator hook up to it?
post #12 of 32
Don't think there is a built-in expansion port on the 3200 - probably have to go for one of those USB port-replicator thingummys.

(The Acer Travelmate 8000's have an expansion port - similar looking machine to the 3200 but based on Intel Dothan and with more business oriented features such as swappable media bay, smart card, DVI out, better battery life.)

Yeah... I don't think there is a port replicator available for the Ferrari 3200...
post #14 of 32
i never understood why people would need/want a port replicator, other than if they need a port that they don't have on the comp itself, but you can fix that with an adapter right? i must be really confused...
post #15 of 32
Some people have a desk with monitor, keyboard, mouse, network, printer, etc. where they work some/most of the time, but when they travel they just take the laptop. Having all these bits plugged into the port replicator instead of the laptop makes it much easier to just disconnect the single expansion port and go.

Regardless, can someone who owns a Ferrari 3200, like DragonFlame, run the battery tests that Okle suggested? It would really help out potential 3200 owners like myself.

I just got my ferrari 3200 yesterday, and today I went into the system menu from control panel, and I saw my specs and my processer was showing it was operating at 793Mhz...isn't the farrari 1.8ghz?
or does it automatically downclock it self when surfing the web (wireless), and typing?

dont be alarmed, thats just AMD's PowerNOW! settings which is similar to Intel's SpeedStep technology. whenever your notebook is doing general use, the cpu will scale down its voltage/clock speed in order to maximize battrery/mobile time.

Whenever you are plugged in it should run full power
post #19 of 32
thanx rince, do i need to download something to minitor PowerNow!, I can't seem to find anything on my comp like that

Hum....i'm actually plugged in, but its still 793Mhz
S

*edit* I rebooted and checked the Bios, and it shows it as 1800Mhz...so i'm really not sure what its runnin at.

Hi all, I have a Ferrari 3200 on order and I was wondering if someone could answer some questions in regards to the battery. I know the battery life is "average" and I was wondering at what the options are for extending that - basically, is there battery hot-swapable with a spare battery? If not, how easy is it to change the battery?
