Emachine, Compal, Acer1712 Need help...

Hello guys, I've been reading this forum, all your reviews and im in need of help. My old ominbook2100 pent233 got damaged in my basement due to a water pipe busting. Not a big lost..but a great gain since Insurance is giving me 1300 roughly to replace it. Along with all the other stuff in my basement..I can spend maybe another 400 on top of what insurance will pay. Grand total 1700 not including tax and shipping if I go that route. Now to my problem.
Games, Im not a hard core gamer..but I do game when something is out I actually want to play. My next game will be everquest2. I'd love to get the sager, but that is out of my budget. And I want to be able to run this game on my laptop. Im not concern over battery life, but the weight of the Acer makes me a little leery. Bare in mine i only move my current laptop on occassion..as of now Im sitting in bed with it on my lap. Even that small task seems it would be difficult with the Acer and the heat issue.

Emachines. Seemingly the best bang for the buck. So where their desktops I had the misforturne of once owning heh. But I read on here it is pretty much the same chasis as one of the voodoo laptops. What concerns me of course is the GPU. The ram and HD can be upgraded later as I need. And I've read the great overclocking scores with the 64mg card in this machine. But do you feel this card will still be good enough say 2 years from now? And I love the AMD64 processor in this machine. I've yet to understand why its better for gaming..hopefully someone can explain this. Will this processor help extend the life of the 64 bit card?

The Acer. I love this machine. I am an Nvidia person. Mainly because i've always ended up pulling out my hair when it comes to ATI Drivers. But again it is so heavy but it has the 128bit card, Ram..desktop parts..a dream machine...except for the weight. I know Adam put it side by side with the Sager. But other then the screen looking larger. I couldn't get a feel for just how big it is. If anyone out there has it and another laptop please post more pic's side by side. As to the Acer, The GPU being removable leads me to hope it will end up with an upgrade, later down the line. But I would think its specs should take me for 2 to 3 years of gaming easily. Again, the 64 big card on the Emachine is scaring me away, if not for that I would go for that machine.

Compal. I didn't know what that was til I came here. Its far more moble, not that it matters since im not really taking it anywhere. And I hear with tweaking and o'c it is getting impressive scores. But how does the 1.7ghz chip stand up to the P4 or AMD realistically? Or in the process of gaming, does it even matter since its mostly the GPU that does all the work? Which, once more leads me back to my debate on the Emachine. I should point out the only reason Emachine is my second choice beneath the Acer is because of the AMD64 and the crazy Rebates and reward points. Pretty much insurance will buy this machine with little added to me..not to mention i can get it in my hot little hands now..and not have to wait.

So for you experts, this is my debate. I will have my insurance money before friday and after two weeks of reading this board, other then understanding the benchmarks..I still have no clue which machine will end up being better for gaming 2-3 years down the line. Any help you can offer will be greatly loved

best performance for your money --> sager 5690. you can grab one for right around $1700.
it's big (9.5 lb) and runs hot, but not nearly as big as the 1712.
it smokes all the competition though, 3500+ easy in 3dmark03
u can get a uxga screen too, it looks very nice from pictures

thats the sager on the right, and the compal cl56 on the left.

1.7 ghz P-M =~ 2.6 ghz P4
generally people will say multiply by 1.5

you'll be able to get the emachines for much cheaper of course, but it won't compare performance wise

personally i'd go with the compal because for i don't see the current a64 chips drastically outperforming the dothan in the cl56 for the things i need to do, and mobility/batt life is important to me. if you're looking for a DTR though, i'd consider the sager

Thank's for the quick response. I hadn't even looked at the 5690 model. I new to gaming laptops and for some reason thought it was an old model the 8790 had replaced. I do like the price and the spec's I can obtain with this machine. And it looks nice in your pic's. Now when you say it runs hot, how hot are we talking. To hot to put on my lap hot, or constantly monitoring CPU temp's hot? Which sceen is that on the pic? Thanks for helping me.

let me see if i can find you a review of how hot it gets. i think it does get pretty hot, but there are three big fans on the bottom if i remember correctly and the reviewer said they could use it without being too uncomfortable. unfortunately to get the best performance you often get the most heat =/

The first thing you need to decide is what you want.

Do you need mobility and battery life? If so you need to look at the P-M's

If you dont care about size/weight and dont mind being grounded to a wall socket, then you will get a bit better performance from a DTR type setup like the sagers.

For most of us in this section of the forums, mobility is a deciding factor. We can sacrifice 200-300 3dmarks for an extra 4 hours battery life =)

here are three varying opinions

I originally thought this got fairly hot but a week or so ago I download mobmeter and noticed it was running at around 57-58 c on idle. After browsing around and getting some feedback on the forum, I found my synaptic drivers were using 50% cpu Usage all the time. I reinstalled the drivers to fix the problem. It now Idles between 42-46 C. I can live with that Temp. The heat seems to build around the top corners of the palm rest and between the screen bottom and the buttons and lights. Originally, prior to fixing the heat issue, this would get uncomfortable after 6-8 hours of use. Then again, I really don’t use the keyboard on the laptop very often, only 3-4 times since the first week. Since fixing the heat issue, I tested this out and it is really not that uncomfortable after 6-8 hours, just barely warm. I think the heat up by the screen may have been what caused the leakage the one time??? Compared to the dell, well, this is hard to say. The dell never got warm, but the fans were broken and stuck on, so its hard to say. If I run Max Fan on the 5690, it is fairly cool.

Heat Issues

Here is where I just didn't do enough research or I just overlooked heat issues on other people's reviews. I purchased this laptop for my son. We fly to Greece for 2 months every summer and need a laptop for him to play his games and educational software. He loves to play the types of games I play too so he will play everquest or World of Worldcraft with me.

We set up for a session of World of Warcraft. I had to go take care of some stuff so he played his character on his own. 2 or so hours passed by and I came back to see him irritated by something on his arm. I took a look and his entire left arm was red. I took him to the doctor blindly not taking anything into account for the reasons why his arm is red and looked like he had a rash. When I got to the doctor, he took one look and said "Yep, it is a rash... a heat rash."

So it turns out this laptop is not the best for a lefty child that has sensitive skin. I didn’t even realize it was the heat from the laptop that caused the rash until I put my hand down next to the laptop and realized how hot the left hand side of the desk area next to the laptop was. My error and because of that.. I must rma the laptop on Monday. I will let everyone know how it goes with that but I don't expect any issues with Pc Torque's reputation.

Guess the search is on for a laptop that has exhaust vents in the rear or right side and performs well enough to run his software and some mmorpgs.

5. Heat. Sitting Idle, can't even hear the machine running. I find it amazingly quiet compared to some of the noise issues I had heard about here in the forums. Even when I use Henrik's Max Fan program to turn the fans on max, I still can't hear the fans over whatever game I'm playing. I will say this though, the lappy gets hot! If at all possible hook an external keyboard up. I'm in the process of designing a stand for the lappy to sit on while I have it hooked up to an external keyboard. If I try and use an external keyboard between me and the lappy the screen just seems to far away. I may just try and get used to the warmth of the keyboard, since when I take it to lan parties not having to bring an external keyboard would be one less piece of gear to carry with me <----lazy One other thing I noticed was the power pack gets extremely hot. Make sure nothing gets around it while it's on.

keep in mind you can always purchase a laptop cooler for relatively cheap that will help with this (~$20 usb powered)

if you want something light and very cool to sit on your lap around the house, i would say cl56. great battery life too, ~4.5 hrs mild usage. just not going to be able to approach 5690 performance, but it sounds like you're not running super intensive games so maybe you don't need it. it's worth considering at least

Again thanks for the help. I'm looking more into the 5690 as we speak. I am all for the GPU, I think future wise this will last me far longer then the AMD.

No I don't overly care about being moble. I do more surfing, and chating, but my reasons to buy are purely gaming. Its easy for me to say I dont do much gaming. But when I ''do'' want to play a game, I want this lappy to handle it.

Everquest, is known for their constant expansions and upgrading. So 2 years from now when they upgrade everquest2 I want to be able to run it and see it, which might be a little difficult on the Emachine.

Since im on a budget, you think the 2.8 will be fine with the 1 gig of ram? I'd love to go higher..but it is the case I can't have everything I want

Check out a base or slightly-configured ChemBook 2056 (Compal CL56) at discountlaptops.com, should set you back about $1750

Very interesting on the heat. I think I can live with whats been describe. A lap cooler..a nice hospital table to swing the lappy back and forth from the bed when im using it there might be worth the effort. I have been looking at the CL56 but I just dont think it is going to give me the preformance. I think in my case I rather over compensate then under...So I can get as many useful years out of this laptop.

Thanks

Fortis,
I know I've always played with the minum requirements. When Everquest did their first expansion..Me and the hubby were sitting in game and he said whats this..So he turned up something and all of a sudden we saw trees swaying in the wind..wooden gain on the buildings. Textures! But only problem..we couldn't move an inch lol. So I rather over compensate..and see what I would other wise be missing.

Synergi.. the 2.8 with 1 gig of ram will definetely be fine. What most games get stumped by is the gpu... and the 9700 in the 5690 is the best out there for laptops at the moment. You will have absolutely no problem with that setup for what you want. Also, regarding heat, I having owned a 56xx model can tell you, it definetely gets too hot to have it on your bare lap.

Was the 5690 ever rebadged as something else?

Enderet,
Thanks..I think I can maybe get a lap table or something..Its workable..and I like the look of that system..

Thanks

The 5690 is sold by a lot of different places under different names... but the Sager name fo rit is the 5690. The 56xx series has been around for years... and the only revisions they do to it is change the internals and sometimes the heating solutions inside. Alienware at one point used the 56xx series and sold it under the Area-51 Mobile, name.

There are dozens of places that sell it under their own names... too many to list right now.

yeah you should be fine with 2.8 ghz. your gpu will be much more of the bottleneck in the gaming situations that you refer to rather than a cpu increase of 200-600 mhz.

it's probably a good fit if you are fine with a tray and about 10 lbs on your lap. pretty decently priced also, which is surprising for its awesome performance

Oh Alienware, not bad..same systems for half the cost..minue the car shop paint jobs.

Aikeo,
10 pounds is a little heavy, but then I was really close to that Acer..compared to that, this is light weight lol.

lol yeah that's why i suggested it, since you were considering that beast =D
