M2 hard drive tick-tacking? true?

Thread Starter
Hi, I found this comment from RayM2, an M2 user, in one of the older threads:

"Toshiba M2 use Hitachi 5k80 series harddisk which has implemented "Load / unload technology". The HDD head will go to parking automatically when ideal. However, this makes the HDD always tick-tick-tick (working-parking-working-parking-........" when some program need to access the harddisk once every few seconds..... I need to turn off the auto-backup function in the Windows so as to stop this noise completely."

A question to those extremely helpful M2 users who've shared their impressions with me recently on the laptop's ergonomics:

Do you find that there is indeed such a problem with the Tecra M2's hard drive?

You know, since I'm quite sensitive to all sorts of annoying noises from a laptop (whether from a fan, or a harddrive, whatever), this is an extremely important question for me...

Would be very grateful for any comments!

My understanding is that turning off unneeded services like hard drive indexing and system restore will greatly reduce random disc access.

Of course there is always the option of getting a quieter HD later down the line.

Thank you "sinner 6."

And come on, are there no other Toshiba M2 users that could offer their advice? Please! This is v. important to me. My decision whether or not to get the Tecra M2 hinges on an answer to this question right now. I have previously heard that the fan of the laptop runs quietly, but now I have these doubts about the hard drive.

Well I have not noticed any major problems with my hd. My tecra performs quite well for a 5400 rpm hdd. Of course when loading or installing a program, if I put my ear against the laptop, I can hear the hdd. For general use I never notice the hdd constantly ticking or making noise. This may be because on all computers I own the first thing I do is turn of auto-restore in windows. I dont like auto-restore, takes away hdd space and hampers performance, so I immediately turn off before I do anything else.

I may not be as picky as some but I am completely happy with my tecra M2. Great performance, great battery life, can play my games (FFXI, BFVietnam), and the keyboard is wonderful. The laptop is so quiet and so cool, I am completely impressed with toshibas product. My last laptop (Compaq) was a beast that was noisy and hot as hell!!!

Thanks a lot, cknobman.

Do you think it makes any difference for the problem in question that the cheaper configuration that I'm considering has a 4200 rathen than 5400 drive? Is your drive also the Hitachi something that the contributor above had that problem with (although, like you, he apparently turned off Windows restore and got it solved), or is it just generally a higher-quality drive? (besides being faster)?

M2 Noises

Well I first got my M2 it had noises. Like when i moved the mouse a high pitch buzzing noise. It also happened when I would leave a cirtian window open from IE. Like some web pages were makeing it make this noise. Since then I have reforematted my HD and reinstalled XP alone and no other crap on it. Then userd the Toshiba Disk to load all the utilities. No more noises. I think it had to do with a video driver or something.

No noises on my 5,400rpm drive. fyi
When it is real quiet, I might hear the normal disk access sometimes, but I have to really stop and listen ...
And on a defrag of the HD ... nothing. hardly a peep.

Now, if you want to talk Hard Drives ... I would like to know is the 7,200rpm Drive Quiet?

7200 quiet

I have two 7200 RPM Hitachi 7K60 drives in a Satellite 5205. Extremely quiet, no louder than previous single 4200 RPM. The Hitachis are awesome, extremely (!) fast, and very quiet and cool. I load 'em heavily b/c I do a lot of I/O intensive work and in a year now I have not once regretted buying them.

Who is manufacturer of M2 optional 60GB 7200 Drive?

Just bought the M2 and had the optional 60GB 7200 drive added.
Does anyone know who the manufacturer is?
The telerep from Toshiba said "CMS" was the company that supplied the 7200 drives to Toshiba.

Anybody know?
thanks
Al
p.s.
I think this is the link to CMS and the drive I am thinking it is.

Any comments on the quality and performance of this drive compared to other 7200rpm drives?

Before my current laptop, I had a 5105-S501. The hard drive ticked badly and it drove me nuts. Shortly after purchasing it, I found a post in the Toshiba forum recommending the install of Intel Application Accelerator. I did that and then changed the Advanced Power Management of the Primary Channel to "Maximum Performance." Thereafter, no clicking. As a matter of fact, as soon as I clicked OK in the IAA dialog, the ticking stopped instantly.

Well, not that I've had my M2 for about a month now (in the shop for USB Port Repair), I noticed this noise as described by miaskiew. Just as is mentioned the HDD is always tick-tick-ticking.

I had not thought about replacing the HDD on such a new laptop but, having set a HDD password (which cannot be removed, opps), and the thought of moving to 7,200 RPMs is making me consider upgrading the HDD (when I get it back from the shop).

OK, so I'm the person who started this thread.
In the end, I did get a Toshiba Tecra M2 and I am fairly satisfied with it, although unfortunately I am not happy with the drive.
Now that I have the computer, I would not describe the noise as "tick-tacking", and I am not even sure if the problem that I described when starting this thread is the problem I am experiencing, but still I am experiencing A problem.
The noise is not so much tick-tacking but rather very short (no more than 1 sec.) high-pitched sounds, coming in very quick succession (but not necessarily at same regular intervals) - it's a bit like some element of the hard drive was turning off, and turning on, off and on, or as if you had some electrical appliance in your hand (like, excuse the comparison, a dental drill) and you were turning the power on, allowing it to "spin" for a sec., and then off, on and off. It's hard to describe, but pretty annoying. It's not the background noise of the drive (the gentle "humming" that you can pretty much only hear when you put your ear to the drive), it's not the "murmur", "purr" (whatever) of the drive when you open or save a file. It's something else: it is clearly in some way connected to disk access, because every time the noise happens, the green lamp on the front of the unit turns on, indicating disk access; but it happens even when the computer is completely idle.

Sometimes happens more, sometimes less. Occasionally it would not do it for a while.

I don't know what this is; is this a problem at all, or just a property of my drive? (4200 rpm 40 GB, made by Toshiba itself). If this is a problem, is this a harware or a software problem (I don't have any unusual applications installed, just office applications). Should I consider exchanging the drive? Or downloading some firmware that would change the way the drive works and stop the noise?

I'd be very grateful for any thoughts.

I am curious to hear what tech support has to say ?
You are under warrantee ... I would call
Please share with us what they say ... or think it is.
Strange that it would make a sound when the computer is idle.
* Unless it is doing a schedualed task in the background when the computer is idle.

What I notice also even when the computer is idle ... there seems to be some small process that is going on ... off and on using 1 or 2% ... my guess refreashing or checking something ... maybe something simple like WinXP checking of you are on the Internet to Update your OS. or a Anti Virus program doing the samething.
* Also check ... Start> All Programs>Accessorys>System Tools>Schedualed Tasks ... for anything that runs to check something every few seconds.

I am also curious if you have One Note running on the WinXP Tray ... and is it Running when you Ctl+Alt+Del to get into Windows Task Manager ... and when nothing is Running on your computer is One Note "Running" ? ... wonder if this is creating the disk access?
Yes, I do have One Note installed but I have not started using it yet.
p.s. the M2 is not my primary computer ... so it is not running every day all day.
But, I have been Trying to have days when I only use the M2 ... just to make sure it can do EVERYTHING ... so far so good.

Miaskiew my M2 also has a high pitched noise coming the area under the touchpad. I removed the hard drive and the noise continues. I'm thinking it is power related somehow and unable to be controlled. The only time I can duplicate it is by loading a new web page. Within a half second of loading it will make the high pitched buzz/whine for a very brief amount of time. Otherwise it always seems to be doing it without any pattern.

Jimco, How do you get to the Advanced power Management of the Primary Channel to "Maximum performance" in WinXP SP2 ?

* I just recently noticed a "very" low level quiet "ticking" that does not seem HD related (but I could be wrong).
The ticking does not seen to happen on say a Defrag of the HD. Mainly I notice it when it is Very quiet and I am not using my M2 but it is on.

ticking on M2

miaskiew, OK I just noticed a Very Low ticking on my M2 ... my office must be very quiet for me to hear it.
It does not seem to be the HD ... because the HD light does not flicker and when I defrag it does not seem to make the sound. Hmmmmm
* It does seem to make the sound when it is sitting and I am not using it.
I will try to ask Toshiba Tech support about it before I go on my Trip.

Hope to get you an answer ... although, my ticking is very soft.

Well, this is what I heard when I had the orig. 40Gb 5400 drive in my lappy. I had thought that I read that it was known as the "hard drive parking" when it is not being accessed. I have since searched unsuccessfully to find this quote.

Since replacing my drive with the Hitachi 7200, I no longer hear the noise. I have not used the 5400 as a spare enough since the swap to be able to advise if it is still happening when the drive is being used as a secondary.

Note: I purchased the 7200-e (always on), and I now have a constant (small) noise of the drive spinning. If you are thinking about going with a 7200, don't get the e(nhanced) unless it's for a server. It not loud enough that I'm upset though.
