HD question

I purchased the 5670 with only 40gigs and my current desktop has about 200gigs worth of valuable stuff AND crap.

I was on a budget so I opted for the 5670 which gave me room to buy an external enclosure for probably an 180gig 8mb cache drive.

Do you guys foresee any problems when I install it onto xp pro? As I haven't purchased the enclosure yet, is firewire faster than usb2.0 as far as hard drive speed?

I guess that's about it. Darn thing won't get here till Friday (crossing fingers).

Thanks guys.

Oh yeah, I wouldn't think it's mandatory to post the "I just got it, now let me tell you what I think" post, but probably customary.

After I'm done smiling and giggling like a little girl, I'd probably do the same.

Would it interest anyone for me to compare my desktop with p4 2.53@3002, Corsair xms3200@422ddr, 9500pro softmod to 9700, and my Dell 20.1" lcd to the lappy? Just curious. The laptop is gonna rock!

Short version: get the firewire.

Long version: Firewire is definitely faster then USB 2.0. I don't care what the theoretical numbers say, but I've used both USB 2.0 and FireWire hard drives of the same specs (same enclosure, same drives) and the firewire was faster by far. Don't ask me why, but if I had to theorize I think it has something to do with firewire being independent of the processor while USB takes processor cycles, but that's a stab in the dark.

Will xp recognize an 180gb drive via firewire enclosure? I thought it had some limitation, around 130gigs or something?

It depends if the Oxford chipset that bridges the Firewire to the ATA hard drive speaks native ATA-6 or (like older, pre-ata-6 ones) the ATA-5 "language" (which is limited to 137GB).

Most NEW enclosures will speak true ATA-6 and can handle even the latest 200GB drives; however, be sure to ask CLEARLY if the enclosure you are getting is able to handle drives larger than 137GB (aka ATA-6 drives).

There is a really good White Paper on this for your reading pleasure. It's quite informative.

But the short answer: MAYBE. You need to ask the vendor you are buying it from, as ATA-6 is somewhat new.

Thanks for info and the read. Weird thing is I swore I saw this enclosure with the same 180g drive and windows recognized it all. But since that day, I haven't been able to see the full 180. So weird.

Power questions

My laptop is going to sit on my desk pretty much all the time. Do I still need to cycle the battery and stuff too? I read that upon getting it, one should drain out the battery, full charge, repeat 2 more times for a total of 3 times. Would that apply to me as well?

I've read horror stories about batteries melting and stuff and I didn't want to have a glob of plastic stuck to my desk because my desk would be ruined.
Yes, it would apply. However, this is more to just keep the battery in good condition for the day you will need it (power failure?). After the initial conditioning, just do it every other month or so.

Doesn't take long, just remove the chord from the machine and compute away, then when it shuts down, power up into BIOS (if you can) and let it die again... then recharge it (ie put the chord back in and go back to normal routine, it will chage while in use).

It's really not a major pain, and it is good to not waste the battery, even if you never foresee using it.

Okay. I'm ready. Now I'm just waiting impatiently for it to come. . .

Thanks myrkat.

MyrKat,
Which chord do you recommend? What instrument do you recommend? Is there any difference in creating the chord via, say, strumming a guitar or playing a piano? Is classical music better than pop/rock?

Sager really is ahead of the curve! A notebook that doesn't need power cord's to run, but instead can be run off of musical chord's! Woohoo!

great all we need is another sarchastic person on the threads :-P

hehe, which firewire enclosure/drive did you get? Im lookin around just browsing prices, how much was it?

guess I really struck a chord, here.

I was speaking structurally! Music isn't the only world with chords!

(there's Geometric Chords, structural chords, airfoil chords, and anatomy...)

Anyway, didn't mean to touch a chord here. (rimshot)

Well, I had the 180g in an usb2.0 enclosure, only saw 127g. Put that same hd into a firewire enclosure, sees the whole thing. Same computer, same drive, different enclosures. What gives?

Read Myrkat's excellent white paper link to learn why this is. It explains it clearly!

BTW - what firewire enclosure did you decide on?

ADS Technologies. It's pretty cool.

It's here!!!

First and foremost, thank you Adam.

As soon as I opened the box up, I saw silver lappy in the middle, with a pretty decent carrying case on one side and miscellaneous lappy stuff on the other.

Trying to discharge the battery now, but there seems to be a lot left. . . so now I'm installing XP. I'm typing this up on my desktop and just adoring my lappy right next to me.

More to come. Nothing much is happening now anhow.

sweet

if you have a digital camera take a lot of screenshots, comparing the size of the lcd to your crt monitor and also shots of it while a games running. Us gamers dig stuff like that

also congrats on the sweet laptop

Definitely. Sorry I couldn't do it today. Spent a lot of time making the lappy's desktop look like my desktop's desktop.

The screen is freaking amazing. 1600x1200 on a 15" screen takes a little time to get used to, I've been using a Dell 20.1" that's 1600x1200 native. I do have 2 dead pixels though. They're both quite far away from each other and they're both not in the center quadrant. It's cool, I'll get used to it.

Laptop is sweet, I'm very happy.

Does anyone know if there are drivers for the screen? Right now, it just says (multiple monitors) on Mobility Radeon 9000. I was under the impression that quality would be better if the correct drivers were used. I'm not sure what to set for the refresh of the screen either. It worked at 60 all the way up to 120, which shouldn't be right.
