Mayhem G3 ordered!!! - Page 3

Thanks Ken. That's the best thing i've heard about the heat. I expected it to be warm but nothing too extreme. Glad to hear that your system is running tops. Have you tried running down the battery? How long can you push it for?

I had an old Pentium 100 IBM laptop years back. It got hot but ran stable. I kept it on for 2 weeks straight running Windows 95 and the thing was like a space heater but it still ran. So the Mayhem G3 should be ok for me.

Rustican, I'm excited for ya bro! Make sure you install the included software so you're not like me... ("why the hell can't I play DVD's?!!!") I brought my G3 on the plane to Colorado so my girlfriend and I could watch DVDs. Decoder is not preinstalled but the disc is included. Bummed. Couldn't impress everyone with my awesome computer's DVD capabilities...

So I just played Rainbox Six 3 instead. (Something I could NEVER do with my other laptop!!)

STILL LOVIN' IT!!
lol i've always wanted to try that on a plane... you know how you can get arrested in some airports for talking about hijacking, bombs, shxt like that? i wonder what they'd do if they found a copy of, say, grand theft auto in you suitcase? watch how the creepy fat lady sitting next to you screams out that "this kid's using a murder simulator!" and everyone starts panicking and shxt... now THAT would be awesome, minus that whole detained-at-the-airport-security-office part.

I'd simply tell that b*tch to "Get over it!".

ROFLMAO!
Ken could you run, aquamark, 3dmark01, and 3dmark03. I wanna see how your laptop benches. and remember turn off the other programs when testing.
Sure...I'm not sure how to do it though. Can I download these testing programs from the internet? While I wait for your response, I will look into it on my own.

Aquamark 3 Score

Ok, I did it! The score was 25,976 (out of the box).

Looked at comparisons...there are a lot of very high-end customized DESKtops with 256MB of VRAM that really kick-ass.

I checked the scores of computers comparable to mine and feel that this score represents an above-average rating for LAPtops/notebooks.

It does seem that 256MB of VRAM makes a TREMENDOUS difference and this is not an option for the G3.

Here are the raw scores. Nothing altered...just the facts. I've been playing high-end on it for numerous days and it never misses a beat! I love it, but if you're a really stat-oriented person...here they are!

from what i've heard 256mb of vram isn't all that important considering that nothing will really take advantage of that for awhile... but then again doom 3 is but a month away, so we'll wait and see.
The reason I came to that conclusion is that the computers with off-the-charts scores all had 256mb of VRAM...other than that, I couldn't determine why those computers, which were most likely desktops, were so incredibly fast.

I may be wrong - wouldn't be the first time!
nah, you're smart ken, it's just that the extra vram does provide a performance boost in benchmarks, but in real world stuff you'd be hard-pressed to notice it much. of course, that's just my opinion, and that's not always terribly correct, so good luck anyway!
More vram allows for higher resolutions and more detailed textures. That's the only reason more and more games are requiring higher minimums on video memory. If you play in high resolutions with low video memory, you'll run out of space and the textures will have to be switched out, which means accessing the hard drive more and/or the aperature memory, which is farther away and slower. But, you're right.. if you play with no detail and at 640x480, more vram won't speed up your game any at all.
is it possible to use a bit of your system memory as temporary VRAM? like, let's say you have something like an Asus M6000 and you wanted a bit more memory so could you possibly do that? i assumed that that was what you were talking about with the "aperture"memory, but i wasn't sure.

26000 thousand isn't shabby. I hope the upcoming sager 4750 breaks 30000 without overclocking, or may have to go with a sager 8790 (i like lots of power). i wonder what you get in the 3d mark 01 and 03.
actually rincewind had to overclock his to get 27000. he has a compal 56.
i wanna see how you do in the 3dmark03 benchmark. that monitors both your cpu (athlon 64) and gpu (ati radeon 9700). i think you should at least get a 9000 on the cpu part maybe into the 10000's range. I would think this processor could school a the 755 dothan.
