first 2 days with my 8887, thoughts

first thought:this system ow3ns me, a hard core mac user of many years.

maybe i'm just smitten because it's my first laptop, i don't know. the mac that i really wanted spec'd out at over $1100 more than this 8887.

it is heavy, relatively speaking, but i too am heavy at 6'4" and 225lbs and havent found it a burden to tote around, nor to use on my lap. a major concern of mine was the heat on me lap, and the lack of comfort due to bulk...but these concerns are so far allayed(until she starts gaining weight anyway]. the fan is quite loud, but comes on rarely.

i'm still pinching myself with the battery life thing. i mean, wow. this fugger really goes quick. running around a packed starbucks today looking for an outlet gained some strange looks. one point of interest though...it dawned on me today that running seti@home was not only draining the battery 30% faster, but was doubling charge up time.

i don't think the novelty of the remote control will ever wear off. it's fun.

regarding the mp3 player, we all need to brainstorm and find an actual use for that slot. it'd be more functional as a remote control fart machine...or flux capacitor.

now for some questions

1) battery: is there some sort of external docking bay or other method by which to charge a secondary(or even thirdary and fourthdary) battery so that i can pop-n-swap-em? is the laptop itself the only means by which to charge?

2)mod bays: i need a zip drive more than i need the two cd drives i have in the comp. is there a third-party answer to this? or am just stuck with usb zips as my only option...

3)what kind of connector/adapter do i need to connect the wall cable to the sager?

some random xp pro questions...
4)how can i mount the hard drive of a neighboring windows machine that is on the network to this system?

5)what you the most useful windows utilities you folks use to make your win XPerience more efficient?

...i'm sure i'll be adding some more in the next few days

oh yeah...

i downloaded return to castle wolfenstein and graphics are phenomenal. the last time i was into gaming was 5 years ago with the introduction of Starcraft. played it over 5 hours everyday for a year, on an iMac 233mhz with massive Rage Pro 4mb video card....and i thought i was the shiznit....

crouching tiger hidden dragon is unreal on this screen. too bad i would need 4 batteries to watch it all the way though...

don't think i'll be doing much gaming on this rig...but it's nice knowing i possess the ultimate system for it. and to all you people that claim the 8887 ghosts too much to make it useable...you have no idea whateth you speaketh from your moutheth.

What resolution are your runng the game in. If its in its native resolution there would be much less ghosting. I played that game on my 900mhz thunderbird with a 32mb tnt card with no problems so I'm sure the 8887 could handle it at 1600x1200. If your not move it to those settings and tell us whats it like. I don't ever plan to play games outside its native resolutions so I am currious to see what its performance is at those resolutions. If it can't handle a quake III base game like wolfenstein it will look like I made the decisions on waiting.

no casper here whitey

i was attempting to imply that i noticed ZERO ghosting. the screen is marvelous, better than my mitsubishi diammond pro 19" flat CRT....the screen was the selling point for me, why i cancelled the dell order after 10 days

I'm happy for you, but it is quite possible that you are not as meticulous as some people are in the way they view their gaming. I asked the questions I did because I truly wanted to know the performance of that game at those levels. It is not just ghosting I'm worried about. I wanted to know how much frame rate you lost. If you had come on complaining that the game was unplayable do to slow down at those resolution you would have indicated to me that the 8887 couldn't handle it. Its no big deal though cause I'm pretty sure it can. Download the unreal tournament 2003 demo and tell us how that runs. Thats a true test of performance. Wolfienstein is quite dated at this point. You'll have more problems trying to run UT2003 then you would Wolfienstein.

it's 128mb of video ram in a 12 pound package. how possibly bad can it be. sager's been building these mother fudgers for 25 years. methinks they know how to do it.

Ok forget it. You don't understand what I'm asking so I'm giving up.

1.) Sorry, nothing like that available. Do you have the dual baterries. I can get about 3 hours between my two.

2.)Nix on this one too, USB is it

3.) are you talking about the TV connector? Check with MyrKat on that if so.

4.) This is the one I really wanted to answer.

a.) winbar winbar.nl is a nifty little taskbar that I run at the top of my screen, it is customiziable with XML news time google search bar,DL speed, CPU Useage,MEM Usage, and email annocements very cool.

B.)Trillian trillian.cc Instant message program for all available messengers.

C.) Dump IE 6.0 and Install Mozilla,
[url[mozilla.org[/url] and optimoz.mozdev.org
it will squash all popups and it just plain rocks, also install the Mouse Gestures and it will allow you to do many browsing task with a flick of the mouse, spawn new windows, change text size,, change browser tabs, got back and forth in webpages just with a left click and move of the mouse.
It will complety change the way you browse.

D.) If you are gonna use your dual monitors with you 8887 the you must have Realtime Soft's UltraMon.
www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/
UltraMon adds 2 icons next to the mini mize/maximze buttons on every window which allow you to cause a window tospan both mon or move a window to one mon or the other with just a click. No Dragging. It also adds a option to your right click context sensitive menus of"open app in second monitior" this also works with web links. It has many other functions too, but those are my faves.

E.) Coming from MAC viruseswerent really a problem for you, they will be now, I use MCafee Anti Virus. It works great and has some neat features. It will scan all your downloads , Email and web for Viruses and It has a firewall that is very effective if you have a broadband connection, plus it will automatically update itself and keep your virus list up to date. Others will reccomend different Anti-virus, and there are other good ones, the only one I say stay away from is Norton's, Anything made by Norton is extremely invasive to your OS and is almost impossible to remove without a format of the HD. don't go there.

F.)Powertoys for WinXP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/ .../powertoys.asp

G.) Coming from MAC, this might make you feel more at home.
http://www.jonmega.com/~iceman/
This guy has devloped a Visual Style for WinXP that Mimics the look of OS X very well with the Icons and the Dock bar all working. Its very nice stuff and low system resources.
Ignore his politcal rant on the first page.

That's all I have for now, enjoy.

The "Wall Connector" or 75-ohm shielded cable (that is standard w/ Cable TV & Satellite) uses a little F-Plug adapter. The 8887 comes with this, but it is easily lost (I lost mine).

However, you can head over to a Radio Shack (or equivalent) and pick one up for $1.99 or so. It's on their website, also, search the forums for "Radio Shack" and it'll be in one of them (someone posted a link to the adapter directly).

I agree w/ davkenrem about www.mozilla.org for browsing; however, I would suggest AVG AntiVirus as it is free and much less a resource hog than McAfee (also catches viruses better, in my experiences). It also integrates with Outlook (and outlook express) should you use those for e-mail (Mozilla's e-mail is not too shabby, though).

I also like Rainmeter & Rainlender for metering and desktop calendar (the Shadow3 skin is awesome!). I also made a custom skin for Rainmeter that shows both CPU usage (plus other things), and it looks like WinAMP 2.xx default, window-shaded (rolled up), so it's tiny and unobstructing.

Which brings me to the MUST-HAVE utilities (other than AVG mentioned above):
  • WinAMP 2.xx (ver 3 sucks resources)
  • IrfanView (best graphic view out there, period.)
  • TweakUI (Windows XP PowerToys)
  • TextPad (great text viewer)
  • OpenOffice.org (free alternate to MS)
  • Mozilla/Phoenix/Opera (anything but IE)
  • Microsoft Streets & Trips (yes, it's great! Do a FULL install)
  • WinRAR (archive utility - my favorite)

I'm sure there's more, I just can't think of them now...

Search these fourms for electrovaya, or look at the compatability list at their site when you go to Buy It Now. Thanks for the try, though.

I ran UT2003 at my 8886 (64 mb card m9) at its sxga native resolution, constant 60 fps! Now i think in wolfenstein at 1600x1200 it would also keep a constant 60 fps.
No loss i think, and i assure there is no frame loss in ut2003. (high graphic setting btw)

Hope that helps.
sweet! that means my 4060 will get around 60 fps too!

you say its a constant 60 fps.. does it mean you can get higher, but some setting is keeping it low?
