Battery conditioning.

As I know it so far, to "condition" a battery, all one needs to do is let the battery die out before recharging it fully the first few times?

To do this, would it be a better idea to do it slowly (i.e. putting it on the bios until it runs out), or to give it a lot of load (like watching a DVD.. or playing memory-intensive games) and do it quickly?

Thanks,
Kelvie

It completely depends on what kind of battery you are talking about. Which kind do you have?

If you want to do it under 'full load' be aware Windows Power Manager will probably shut it down before a full drain. Mine is set to Hibernate @ 7% left.

But that can be taken off so that it doesnt happen.

Your method of conditioning is wrong and should be avoided with lithium-iuon batteries. I think you were thinking of the method used for nickle-cadium batteries...

so whats the deal with conditioning. so i get my compaq with a 12 cell lith-ion. what must i do to make sure i get the most life out of it?

Simple Guidelines

* Avoid frequent full discharges because this puts additional strain on the battery. Several partial discharges with frequent recharges are better for lithium-ion than one deep one. Recharging a partially charged lithium-ion does not cause harm because there is no memory. (In this respect, lithium-ion differs from nickel-based batteries.)
Short battery life in a laptop is mainly caused by heat rather than charge/discharge patterns.
* Although memory-free, apply a deliberate full discharge once every 30 charges to calibrate batteries with fuel gauge. Running down the battery in the equipment does this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate. The battery life will not be affected.
* Keep the lithium-ion battery cool. Avoid a hot car. For prolonged storage, keep the battery at a 40% charge level.
* Consider removing the battery from a laptop when running on fixed power. (Some laptop manufacturers are concerned about dust and moisture accumulating inside the battery casing.)
* Avoid purchasing spare lithium-ion batteries for later use. Observe manufacturing date. Do not buy old stock, even if sold at clearance prices.

thank you enderat. i actualy just went to that site and read the whole thing. so no special "conditioning" required. just need to keep it in a cool spot especialy when on charge. there is no maintenance i can do because it loses capacity with age anyway (all i can do is keep it in a cool spot to avoid accelarated aging) and have it on charge a few extra times over draining it to the cut-off and then recharging it all the way.

Hey, nice article. I think it should clear up the many misconceptions of lithium ion batteries. It's evovled so much since the old days of Nick-cad batteries.

PEOPLE DON'T WORRY ABOUT CONDITIONING LITHIUM ION BATTERIES OR LEAKING CHARGES WHILE NOT IN USE LIKE NICKEL CADMIUM BATTERIES!!

No problem guys... I think I should give credit to MARQUISDARQUIS, who was the person that showed me that site to begin with.

Thanks Enderet, but I owe it to someone who challenged my previous thoughts on the matter so I made a thorough search and discovered U of Batt which forced me to change my ideas. Just goes to show its always best to check your facts before you open your month, if for nothing other reason than to check your shoe size.

Wow.. in the manual it says to condition it (discharge/recharge 3 times), so I was a little confused.
