i got the same question. i am getting the r3000z with the 54g in there and also would like to know which would give me the best bang for the buck (esp when used with a Motorola Surfboard cable modem)

oh and if these routers have firewalls, is it possible to disable them? i dont really like them
post #4 of 47
My roommate has the Netgear WGR614 and a Netgear 11g pc card. He says it's "totally tits" but I've never used it.

The Linksys I know you can disable the firewall. But why disable a hardware based firewall? The linksys has the ablility to open the firewall to a machine outside the local network, ie the internet.

I'd recommend staying far away from NetGear, myself. They have a problem with overheating, and need to be rebooted fairly often.

If you want the 108Mbps, stick with the D-Link. It's not perfect, but it's a lot more reliable than NetGear.

I have the Motorala Surfboard Modem too!! Got if for about 30 bucks (used)...I like my D-link 524 just because I got it for less then 50 dollars on sale...What I would have gotten otherwise if it wasn't because of price was the linksys. I've had good luck with them, expecialy my outdated 4-port router thats lighter then a feather...still works though, and I liked their firmware. Not to say I haven't had good luck with d-link though, in fact I have...I installed a 22mb wireless b before, and it still is good and functioning.

BTW: I was looking at the compaq, but decided on the emachines because of both features and price

Oh yeah, I believe I once had a 10mb wired 4 port switch from linksys...and it still works too...I think...it did the last time I used it

so brand-wise? D-Link and Linksys is the only way to go?

i was reading cnet reviews earlier and i saw that the d-link DI-624 has really nice range. cnet got a signal from 224 feet. the linksys had less range but it was still good anywhere below 120 feet

do you also recommend me to buy a PC card for my laptop? im not sure what kinda crap mini-pci card ibuypower is gonna put in my laptop.

If they put one with a broadcom chip in there that supports wireless G, I would probably accept it, unless you are planning on moving to support with both G and Bluetooth.

Unless you are EXTREMELY tied for money, I would stick with a major brand such as them...they are more reliable and have better performance. If they are a big company, they will also be likely to keep their product up to date. Don't trust me, though, its just my opinion...I just feel safer, especialy with wireless, with a name brand. I've also had pretty good experiences with both.

Right. My current network is a USB addapter HPNA 2.0 (10mbps) by Compaq. Just feel a lot better knowing its a major company (although it was hell to talk to their support about this specific product). The only reason i want to swap it for a WiFi is because I don't have phone jacks everywhere and since my lappy already comes with built in G (i am taking the free upgrade..not doing the bluetooth), i might as well make the most use of it. plus my land line is being all messed up because of the HPNA.

Mmm... gonna piss off some people here, maybe.

Take apart those routers. D-link, Netgear, Linksys... they all have the same parts inside, for the most part.

I do alot of house calls where the D-link router just gives out every so often and requires a hard reboot. Junky hardware, IMO.

Ya know... the company that makes the M6n, asus, makes a killer wireless G router, complete with a shared USB port that you can turn into a print server, remote web cam, or FTP server if you add a remote hard disk. Mine is on order now.

I currently have an SMC. Its been really good, tons of options on the interface... maybe too many. Its a bit unwieldy.

I will post a review about the asus wifi router when I get it, if anyone cares. Price on that one is right around 100$. Not bad if you do wifi and need a print server, hp jetdirect cards are around 2 bills by themselves, hehe.

Where would I find one of these?

I've been very happy with my Buffalo WBR-G54. It's been on continuously for over a year and I've never had to reboot or had any heat issues.

the asus router- check where asus laptops are sold... I know proportable carries a ton of asus products.

right now I have a W1 on the way, with one of those routers. I will post a review when I get the eq, and a chance to do so.

I have that exact Linksys. I don't have a ton of experience with other routers, but this one works great, is easy to setup and use. I don't see why anyone wouldn't recommend it.
linksys has a nice interface, but the hardware is, IMO, mediocre at best.

just... whatever anyone does here, please, please stay away from d-link. yes, they are the cheapest ever. So were the yugos (car analogy) - you get the idea.

im a bit confused why the D-Link is so hated. i am about to make a purchase for a wireless router. This link shows that the D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G DI-624 has incredible range, while this link shows that the higher rated Linksys Wireless-G WRT54GS performs significantly worse. what exactly makes the D-link a "cheap" product (~75 isn't cheap in my book ) and the Linksys much better?

ive also read reviews which say the d-link is better. yesterday i saw a reciew on cnet which shows that the d-link had twice the range on the linksys with speedboaster. it is also faster having a high speed of around 44Mbps compared to the 24Mbps that the linksys had.

but then again, user ratings for the linksys was much higher just as it exists in this thread...

d-link may have a cheap price tag but if it performs better then the linksys, why do most people hate it? dont just look at the price tag now and say the most expensive is the best...

maybe they are building some different eq than I am used to. but every d-link I have run into was an absolute POS. Take it as you will.

I would make sure you get a 30 day return policy with your purchase, and exercise it well.

I also dont know much about thier new stuff. Just... thier in my "brands to avoid" list. Which includes HP(everything HP) compaq, dell, linksys, ... cant think of any others right now.

I am suspicious of all the big boy companies right now. I have one client who unboxed an e-machine PC and it had the sasser worm on it. right out of the box. My sister bought a dell PC, and out of the box- it was riddled with spyware.

I am tangenting, but I dislike dlink for the same reasons, similar stories, basically shoddy engineering and bad quality control. But maybe the new ones are different.

Radio strength is huge- but so is reliability.

Just my opinion, be it as polarized as it is.
