Sony Vaio GRV670 Ram Problem

I have a GRV 670, I upgraded ram to 1 GB... at first it works good, after few month I notce the computer somes would getting slower, and take me sometimes to figure out that the ram sometimes show up as 1 GB and some times 512MB.

I did try to put one chip in to test to see if the month borad is good or not... but when I put one in, it never had problem only when I put two in at the same time the problem begins, give me different reading on how much ram I have in the computer

please help if you have any similer problems

The second module could be defective. Try putting that one by itself to see what happens. I've heard of faulty RAM frequently crashing a system and rebooting on its own.

Vaio

Very common in this line of Sony's...dimm module has defective solder joints...readily repaired by someone who knows how to do it.About $150.00.I have the name of a tech who specialises in this.LMK if you need it.

I have a 680 and wiley is right, I had that solder joint defect in mind, but at the time was under warrenty and sony repaired it.

It's not that they are defective it is that over time sony ram slots fail. they can fail in two different was: as previously stated they can get cold solder joints and that can be fixed by reflowing the ram slots. the other way they fail is there is a spring in then that presses the ram against the pins in te socket and that will go bad and the only to fix that is to replace the ram sockets. both of these repairs are quite hard to do dur to the ram sockets having extremly small pins. if the computer is under warranty i would suggest to send it in for service. hope this helps Hellbringer
