Windows ShutDown Delay

Thread Starter
I noticed this started happening just a couple days ago. If I want to either Shut-down, restart, log-off or any of those commands - after I click the button the comp just sorta sits there doing nothing for about a minute then shutsdown/restarts or whatever im trying to do... And during that minute delay if I try to run any applications for example Internet Explorer or winamp they say that windows is already shutting down and also my Task manager does not come up if I alt-ctrl-del during that pause time... I timed it it takes exactly one minute for the "Windows is shutting down screen to appear" then another 2 minutes to shut down from there.
I ran Norton Antivirus 2004 and it came up with nothing.

has anyone had this problem before?

Tweak #8 - Automatically Kill Programs At Shutdown

Don’t you hate it when, while trying to shut down, you get message boxes telling you that a program is still running? Making it so that Windows automatically kills applications running is a snap. Simply navigate to the HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop directory in the Registry, then alter the key AutoEndTasks to the value 1.

Note: the key ’AutoEndTasks’ might not exist. If not, simply create it with a value of 1. To disable the AutoEndTask feature, simply change the value back to 0.
I got this from http://www.tweaktown.com/document.ph...Id=120&dPage=4

If it doesn't work, let me know... and I will tell you another fix that might help.

Ive tried it where I manually close all possible running processes and it did nothing but I will try this fix and let you know. I also ran Adaware and Spysweeper and they found nothing.

a last resort would be to format my hard drive, but im trying to steer away from that as it would take up so much of my time which I have very little of as Im working two jobs

I did this and nothing has changed. It still takes forever to shut-down.

Im gonna try this in the Command prompt: SHUTDOWN -s -t 01

Shutdown XP Faster

When a user shuts down Windows XP, first the system has to kill all services currently running. Every once in a while the service does not shut down instantly and windows gives it a change to shut down on its own before it kills it. This amount of time that windows waits is stored in the system registry. If you modify this setting, then windows will kill the service earlier. To modify the setting, follow the directions below:

1. Start Regedit.
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control.
3. Click on the "Control" Folder.
4. Select "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"
5. Right click on it and select Modify.
6. Set it a value lower than 2000 (Mine is set to 200).
That is another one I found.

i dont think these fixes are specifically for my problem as mine pauses for minutes... not a matter of seconds

somehow i dont think there is a fix for my problem. Now I either have to live with it or format - although i may format since all i have on my pc is Photoshop and Battlefield 42'

Like I said, its easier to learn to live with it. And you'll be much happier if you hibernate instead of shut down, its starts much faster then.

nahh, ive got nothing on my hard drive so it wont be so bad to format.
Formatting now... should have it back up and running by tommorow

Yep, XP always runs better if you just reformat every month or so ...Maybe I'll just create a restore disk of my one month time...

this is so rediculous. I formatted, reinstalled all of my drivers, software, games and such and everything worked totally fine! and as I was trying to get my wireless connection to work again my shutdowns started doing what they had before I reformatted... (im sure its not because of my internet stuff because my brother has the same exact system as me and his is fine)
Im gonna try to format once more sometime this week... if it happens again what do you think is causing this problem?
