NEED NIC HELP! Intel Pro/1000 only connecting at 10MB!

Just got Dell Precision 650
SPECS:
2x 3.06Ghz Processors
2GB DDR
15,000RPM 73.4GB Seagate
QuadroFX 3000

WAS ON THE PHONE WITH DELL TECH FOR 2 HOURS (big surprise) AND THE TECH BASICALLY TOLD ME THAT HE COULD DO NOTHING TO HELP. I AM CONNECTED TO A CABLE MODEM AND HAD AN XPS FOR A YEAR THAT WORKED GREAT WITH A GIGABIT CARD (Broadcom netxtreme). HOWEVER, THE ONBOARD CARD WILL NOT CONNECT ABOVE 10MB (I PLAYED WITH DRIVERS AND CONFIGURATION). I EVEN INSTALLED THE NETXTREME BROADCOM PCI CARD THAT WORKED GREAT WITH MY XPS (AND DISABLED THE ONBOARD), BUT THE SAME PROBLEM HAPPENED (WILL NOT CONNECT ABOVE 10MB). I AM EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED, PLEASE HELP. I am on the EXACT same cable modem, with same cable, etc. This really doesnt make sense if it is a driver issue, becuase the same card that worked with my XPS is only connecting at 10MB with my 650??? Also, I went and checked the bandwidth and it was very good, but whenever i have more than one or two browser windows open it really slows down, which is how i even noticed that there was a problem in the first place.
thanks,

Question if your connection to a cable modem, why would you want to be more than 10megs. Now becarefull on what you say. I word for a Cable internet tech support. 10meg, or 100megs is not going to change your download speed. May always try getting a new ethernet cable.

Its not so that i can use more than my "fair" share of bandwidth. It is just that the throughput is really bad. I cannot have multiple browser windows or downloads going even at slow speeds. If i have 1 thing going its great, but multiple doesnt work at all. For instance, right now since this was the last browser window that i have open it will refresh and work very fast, but the other 2 that are open (www.msn.com and support.dell.com) will not refresh and if i click on links i will get the Page cannot be displayed screen after about 2 minutes of trying to load.

well the whould have nothing to do with the 10mb. you internnet connetiong is what 1.5mb or maybe 3mb. If your having problems like that it may me something else.

truthfully 10,100mb or 1000mb enet connecting will not affect your internet speed. just to make sure you are hooked up directly to the modem or with a router?

I am directly connected to the cable modem, but the 10mb instead of 1.0gb connection speed is the only thing that i can find that is not what it should be. Everything else is functioning properly, so i have no idea what else it could possibly be.

the cable modem is only letting you connect at 10mbps there are no modems at all besides dsu/csus prob that let you connect at 1gb. really the only tech out there that lets you connect with your gigabit connection is gonna be a gigabit switch. its pretty much the same if you plug into a 100mb switch, its still only going to be 100mbps.

I UNDERSTAND THAT IM NOT CONNECTING AT 1.0GBS. That is NOT the point. If i have a Gigabit adaptor, it should say 1.0GB, not 10MB. I know this because my last one said 1.0gb with the SAME connection.

Are you talking about this? http://64.191.134.108/this.JPG

exactly that is what i am talking about.
I would not care if it was going as fast as it should, but this thing slows down when only like 2 browser windows are open.

Now that is an old modem. That is why is shows 10mb. but with the problems your having I think it a computer problem.
look why are you hooking up your computer directly to the cable modem (bad idea, big security flaw). In my personal opinion, which may get flamed, you should at the bare minimum have a router between your computer and the modem, finally try a good brand of nic card like 3com. If it is a modem issue, and you rent it from your ISP complain till they replace it. I know at my home, we have cable internet and it is shared on 5 computers is always fast. Also do you have full duplex mode turned on. The could be the root of the problem.

or you could not listen to me.

have you tried doing a direct computer to computer connection with a cross over cable to see what speeds it registers as.

I had a computer connected in the EXACT same fashion for the last year and it showed 1.0Gbs connection without any problems. The second i swapped my Dell XPS for a Dell PW 650 the connection reads 10MB. this is definately some hardware problem and i could not believe it has anything to do with the modem itself. I have already tried a standalone PCI card but that only showed 10mb as well, which is extremely weird. Just to make sure, i re-connected the XPS to the SAME modem with the SAME cable and it showed a 1.0Gbs connection. I went into bios but didnt see anything to play with there.

Ok here's the deal. A Surfboard 3100 has a 10M port on it. I don't care what your old card said. If you connect to a 10M port you will rightly show 10M, 100M etc. Your old card was incorrect in showing it's rate. You will only connect as fast as the port you are connecting to. Goto www.dslreports.com and do some speed tests.

Just to jump in on this thread... My moms computer is doing the same thng as Telemekos.. it should be saying 100mbps but is only showing 10... she has a router between the cable modem and her comp, but it just started doing this recently.. i too tried uninstalling/reinstalling drivers.. updating.. yadda yadda yadda.. but nothing works.. i ran virus, trojan, and spyware checks but everything seems normal.. (used Norton Systemworks 2004)... the only thing i didnt do was replace the NIC because i didnt have the time or the money.. but it SHOULD be working normally..could this be a flaw in some microshaft update or something?
