The 8600 Backorder...Got a D800 Instead

Hey,

A while back, I posted a thread titled "To Order or Not to Order" describing an outrageous deal that I got on an Inspiron 8600 system. Well, my order was stuck in the infamous "In Production" for more than five days. I thought it was normal considering that my estimated ship date was only Monday June 28. Anyways, I got a call from my sales rep yesterday saying that the 8600 was backordered and it would take more than for Dell to get me my 8600. So instead, he offered me the D800 with the exact same specifications. Strangely, he said he could "arrange" for the MR9600PT Graphics Card to be put in the D800 even thought it was not offered for configuration in Latin America. Moreover, he also offered me a 100 USD credit for the troubles. Naturally, I accepted, and here and got the order confirmation within minutes....

Wow, that is not fair. I got mine for $2100, and yours is better.

Sounds like a very good deal. I just orderd an Inspiron 8600 today, maybe they will offer me the same deal!

You'll have to flash your D800 with the M60 BIOS in order to take advantage of the PC2700 RAM you listed in your signature. Otherwise, it will only run at 266MHz with the D800's crippled BIOS. To flash the M60 BIOS via USB Key drive, follow the bootable image link below.

This is an extraordinary deal in terms of pricing alone.

Further, it is the first time I have heard about anybody being able to get ATI 9600PT with D800. I simply can't believe how lucky you are. If this trend continued, D800 with ATI 9600PT would become a clear winner.

As somms said, flashing to M60's BIOS might be necessary, but who knows, maybe finally Dell will allow D800 to use PC2700 on its own.

Thanks Somms,

I will do that. However, since I have paid for a 3 YR NBD Warranty, I was wondering if flashing the BIOS w/ another system's BIOS would void the warranty.

About the MR9600PT card in teh D800, apparently, according to my sales rep, who turns out to be the a superior manager for the Latin American Sales Division, the D800 will come w/ a "dummy graphics card" and the order for the MR9600PT will be coming from Dell Spare Parts. Apprently then, a Dell Certified Technician will come to my house and change the graphics card for me. However, my specifications and the warranty will be warranting a MR9600PT.

As far as I know, you should be able to switch the D800 and M60 BIOS-es at least a thousand times before reliability issues emerge. Just remember to flash your system to D800 before calling for tech support.

Although your way of getting 9600PT with D800 may seem unusual, I guess some Dell reps may deliver nonstandard configurations. To wit, my 1024MB chip was nominally ordered from Dell Spare Parts, but in fact it was factory installed.
