It's not pronounced like "Sega," Devion. It's pronounced like "Say-jer" if I remember correctly.
Now, I understand everyone trying to come up w/ a level playing field for the 5690 and A51-m to play on, but it's not level. The entire purpose is to find out which machine's better, right? Well, let's see what the machines have in comparison w/ each other and what the other doesn't have.
From PC Torque:
3.4ghz P4 EE
128mb ATi Radeon 9700
2048mb 400DDR Dual-channel
Dual 60gig 7200rpm HDs
Aegean Blue Paint w/ High Gloss Finish (Add ~2 weeks to order)
15" UXGA Wide Angle View Screen
Dual 4x DVD+/-R/RW,CD-RW Drives (Not sure how the 5690 works as I own an 8790. I'm not sure if one can have 2 optical drives and 2 HDs. PCT's page lets you configure 4 drives total, but I'm thinking that you can run 2 optical + 1 HD or 2 HD + 1 optical. In any case, the price quoted above is for 2 60gig 7200rpm HDs + 1 DVD+/-RW drive since I don't think a 4 drive system is possible)
Internal Wireless 802.11g Turbo(108Mbps)
6-in-1 Card Reader
1 year tech support
Free leather carrying case
No shipping date given, but judging from the posts in the Sager forums as of late, units are sent out relatively quickly (excluding painted models)
Support for International Buyers via Export Coverage (additional US$45- not included- wasn't sure how to balance that vs AW's UK presence)
3.2ghz P4 EE
128mb ATi Radeon 9700 (Supposedly upgradeable, but at this point, most likely not going to happen unless it's a full upgrade + motherboard similar to the Sager setup- which Alienware does, in fact, do)
Half Life 2 free w/ purchase of ATi Radeon
2048mb 400DDR (not Dual-channel)
Dual 60gig 7200rpm HDs (Please note that usage of dual HDs, if I remember correctly, is dependent on the owner using the optical drive space for the 2nd HD. Ergo, you can use EITHER your DVD+/-RW drive or your 2nd HD. Not both at the same time. An important limitation to keep in mind)
Saucer Silver complete w/ Glowing Eyes on Custom Lid (Conspiracy Blue not available on the 16.1" LCD model at the time of this comparison)
Internal Wireless 802.11 a/b/g
3-In-1 Media Card Reader
1 year tech support
Free shipping (at time of this comparison)
Free AW T-Shirt
Free AW Mousepad
4 Speakers? (Wasn't sure- just said "enhanced front speakers" on the page)
Estimated Shipping Date of 06 August 04 (appx. 1 month wait)
Support for UK buyers due to AW presence in UK
That's how I'd compare them. Because at this point you can see what's deficient in what company's product. If you look through the list, it's obviously not an even match. There's no degrees in Rocket Scientistry or anything required to connect the dots, so I'm not going to belabor the point.
If I've made any mistakes, please point them out. I'm not in any way, shape or form trying to be a fanboy. There's a difference between a fanboy and someone who sees obvious differences between 2 machines. I don't begrudge anyone who buys AW. I was doing my darnedest for a long time to get one myself. If I ever have enough cash laying around that needs to be burnt, I'll buy an A51-m just so I can have one because darn it, they're cool! But as for my personal opinion on what's best, that's in my sig.
We all have different needs and wants and definitely different preferences. No reason for threads like this to turn into little wars. There's enough room here for all of us. We should be supporting each other, not trying to gouge out each others' eyes.
I will say that I'm prone to that on occasion, myself, but it's generally when I feel that there's something wrong going on. Lay the facts out and let people come to their own conclusions. If there's lying or mishandling of the facts, that's different. I did my best to lay out the 5690 and A51-m full decked out and without any bias. If there are mistakes, they are entirely unintentional.
Just my 1/2 cent worth.
