buying a Toshiba Notebook

Hey,

I was planning to buy a Notebook, and thought I would buy it from some famous vendor rather from the lesser known suppliers or from some unbranded firms. I mean i thought i wud rather buy it from Dell, Toshiba, IBM, Sony etc. rather than buying a Mitac or C56.

I wud be going to graduate school this fall, so my most work wud include taking notes (word processing), surfing the net, videos, MP3s, and something similar. Yeah, not to forget using it with my mobile phone and my DigiCAM.
So i dun think i need a very powerful notebook, but yeah i want it to be lightweight, trendy and if possible having a large screen.

I thought of buying a IBM T42 , but given that they are not much trendy , I thought of considering my options with Toshiba notebooks. Cud you all suggest me some nice notebook that will serve my purpose.
As for budget, well I am open to it. But ideally i wud prefer it to be around 1400.

what do you consider trendy?

If you want to go trendy, try Apple's or Sony or Toshiba which is probably gonna be your best bang for your buck!

Hey thanks Wooster for ur suggestion.

Tell me one thing, how would you rate after sales service of Alienware.
And as someone on the forum has pointed out that though IBM doesn't look classy, but under the hood, iz one of the best components put together, how correct is this claim?

They are all pretty much the same except for the branding these days. The engineers just spec them out and hand off the assembly of components to the far east.

i would recommend the dell 600m, its pretty small for a laptop that still has a cdrw in it, you can change the color/style (trendy i guess), and its powerful enough. It also has the docking station option. My girlfriend just got one, and I envy it completely. I would stay away from toshiba unless you want laptop that only lasts a year.

Many peoples opinions differ.

I've had seven Toshibas over the last 10+ years. 2 are brand new. the old ones all lasted more than a year. They only got retired due to technology trends, ie: CPU speed, LCD type, etc.
in fact I still have 2 at home that are over 2 years old that I still (can) use.

The Dells they use here at work, though Ok, you can keep.

hope this helps!

PS; I've also owned other brands, TI, Zenith too, and I work with Dells.

Don't buy a Toshiba. If you do buy an extended warranty.

why not Toshiba?

I've been browsing through posts, researching/reading reviews (CNET and others), asking questions, and have come down to the M2 (my lightweight choice), the 8600 (partial to Dell's since I own a desktop with "0" problems) and the HP zt3000.

Specs are about the same when I customized:
Pentium M 725
1x512 RAM
60 GB @ 5400, but may go up to 7200 based on what I'm reading
Not concerned with having a widescreen or the bright displays--just something not too small and clear enough.

Not a big gamer. Will be lugging it between classes (teacher with no classroom) and using it everywhere. Will need it for PowerPoint presentations.

Why or why not Toshiba? Why or why not Dell? It seems the more I read the more problems and pluses I find for both. I'm spending about $2000 with upgrades/warranty so I want the best I can get for the $$$.
