Per the GX7, you won't be able to purchase one of these - as far as I know. The EX7 is the model that replaced it and basically similar in style.
As for the buttons, I am not sure about the Media edition, however, normally, these are just for offline playing of CDs. This means that when your system is turned off, you can pop a CD in the drive and play it - using the DJ to control the playing. Once the system is booted up, I don't remember being able to control anything with it.
