corrupted graphics

the above image is a picture of the current troubles im having with my 6 day old emachines M6809. this has happened ever since i got the laptop. ive found the problem to only happen when the powerplay settings are set to max performance as opposed to max battery life. when i took it to bestbuy (big mistake), they couldnt find anything wrong with it. the only problem with having the settings to max battery life is it clocks down both the core and the memory down, so i thought maybe it was the video card, but bb told me it was not and refused to replace it, so now ive got to solve the problem by myself (with your help). any help will be appreciated. thanks in advance.

What corrupted graphics?

Well anyways, you say it doesn't happen while clocked down, so maybe it has to do with heat...just a thought...if not I would think about drivers, but since those aren't "officialy" upgradeable some people might not take that route...

well, bb told me that it wasnt hw (not that i trust them) and i already tried the latest omega drivers.

forgot to say, the underside of the notebook does get kind of hot, especially around the memory....hmmmmm.......

looks like you might have wrong configuration for the video settings, make sure those are correct, I would try installing latest ati drivers again if your video settings are correct

well, i have tweaked just about every setting in the ATI control panel, all to no avail. also, ATI does not offer mobile drivers, but refer to the manf. website, emachines, which doesn't have any.

Print out the screenshot and take it to best buy and show them what you mean. I returned mu 6805 at day 13. I had no problems with I just needed something lighter with better battery. I told them about he known problem of the CPU not cloking up when it is set on Battery and Max performance. They took it back and did not charge a restocking fee.

well, the thing is, i did take it back. i showed them the problem and suggested it might be a problem with the video. they refused it was the problem, wouldnt take it back, and told me "I shouldnt play games on it." this really pissed me off. i spoke to the manager, and he had the tech at the counter look at it. the tech tried everything he could from patching games to updating drivers and everything in between. i also explained to them that the problem was with almost all the games, not just one, in contrast to their idea that the games should not run on a laptop because they are not "made" to play games. when they finally were "gracious" enough to exchange my laptop, it was for an open box that they did not remember where it came from, whether it was a floor model or a return. i decided to keep the one i had, and not risk more problems. also, if i did exchange it, they said that was the last exchange i could perform.

whooops my bad, forgot ati don't offer any mobile drivers, what I meant was reinstall from the restore dvd, or if you did that already, download the omega drivers and try that.

http://www.omegadrivers.net/

if both those drivers don't fix it, you probably do have a bad video card, take it to another BestBuy or bring it back there again(different time?) and try get different tech to check it.

Yeah, I'm getting pretty annoyed that people are hiding behind "laptops aren't made for games" when we got graphics cards like the ati 9600 & 9700 in them. If this were the case why bother giving notebooks graphics cards?

Have you tried contacting Emachines themselves?

Best of luck to you.

i completely restored windows from the restore disk, as well as run the latest omega drivers. also, when i contacted emachines tech support they tried to tell me in chat that the mobile 9600 didnt have T&L. also, when i took it to best buy, there was 3 different people who looked at it, and no one knew or saw anything like this before.

Did you, by chance, remove the original ATI control Panel before installing the Omega drivers?

yep, went to add/remove programs and uninstalled all ATI products.

You have every right to return the product to BB. They can not refuse it if it is in the 14 day window and it is defective. It does not matter if you play games or work on spreedsheets.

I would go back to them and point out their return policy. WHich is a 14 day policy. ****, you can return it even if you dont like the color, weight or whatever in the 14 day period (look at the back of the receipt) they will just charge you a restocking fee. But they charge no fee if it is defective. I suggest you call up the 1-800 for Best Buy and tlak to them and let them know that you have currupted graphics and that they are refuding to take the laptop back.

I tell you what, I will call the bastards at your local store. After I am donwe with them you will have a complete refund and an apology. I love to mix it up with companies that will not honor their retrun policy. (I am seriosu by the way)

Your other options is, if you paid by credit card, to call up your CC compnay and let them know that you bought a defective laptop at BB and went to return it and they are not honoring their own retrun policy and dispute the charges.

You have very right to do it.

I think that may be a corrupted graphic driver file, so try uninstalling the drivers with driver CLEANER 3.0 (beta i think) and install the latest OMEGA drivers, and install win updates and DX9.0b

i tried to return the thing, and they tried to tell me it was not defective. the only other M6809 in the store was an open box. also, i didnt really feel like paying a 15% restocking fee on a $1738 laptop.

He needs to do a clean install of Windows and see if the problem persists after installing video drivers and such.

well, i was gonna see the responses on here before i had to reformat. i already tried restoring, but if the ghost image had a problem, then i could understand reformatting.

graphic corruption

dont know if this will help.

I had the same problems with a 9600xt card for my desktop.
Everyone told me to reinstall this and that change settings, check overheating, etc. I did it all. It turned out to be a bad card.
It would especially artifact with ut2004 and far cry,

So, here's my advice... is the card hot? check under overdrive in
the ati control panel. If it isn't- run a graphic test program like 3dmark03, one that tests directx9 performance, these can cause the most artifacting, like the "mother nature" test in 3dmark03. If it artifacts like crazy during those tests and the card is not hot, then
it probably has a bad graphic card.

Take it to those morons at BestBuy and show them that it freaks during a benchmark program. I believe these override the ati control panel settings, thereby proving it's not a setting problem, not hot, no heating problem, therefore it's a bad hardware problem.

If it works out like that, do what you need to do to exchange it. If it is broken, it will stay broken. I mean how may hours have you already invested in trying to fix it. If you get another machine and it was a hardware thing, as soon as you fire up your game it will work! (hopefully)

Good luck.
