HP Finds Problems with Memory Modules, Recalls Laptops

HP, one of the world’s largest maker of digital equipment and personal computers, said it might have to repair or recall up to 900 thousand of notebook computers as a result of a flaw found in third-party memory modules used in the company’s mobile PCs.

I wonder if Dell will be doing the same thing...

Depends if it affects Dell computers or not .. Did Dell use the same memory chips/modules and hardware configurations that caused problems with HP?? If not then there would be no reason to replace them.

sounds a bit shady to me. HP blamed some of the leading memory manufacturers such as Infineon Technology, Micron Technology, Samsung Electronics and Winbond for a "design flaw" in the memory modules. Hmmmmm seriously now, i wonder if the idiots at HP ever stopped to think that perhaps they, HP were the ones with the design flaw in their machines. I could understand one memory maker having a design flaw, but several of them? PLEASE HP, i highly doubt it

I agree....

It's obvious anything that doesn't work with an Hp product suffers from a design flaw!

i also read somewhere that dell was "looking" into it...

Memory Glitch Spurs HP Recall

Quote:
The flaw affects a complex matrix of products. According to Hockey, the lockups appeared when memory from Samsung Semiconductor Inc., Winbond Electronics Corp., Infineon Technology Inc. and Micron Technology were used with Intel's Intel 845MP, 845MZ, 852PM, 852GME and 855PM mobile chip sets and either the Mobile Pentium 4 or Pentium M microprocessors. However, the glitch was not caused by the chip sets or processors themselves, he said, but by the memory from the four manufacturers.
cpu-z is reporting the 2 sticks of 512 MB ram in my XPS as being made by Hyundai.
