uh.... you realize the 1710 is ~15 lbs right, 17'' screen?

it's like the total opposite of the ferrari, a thin-and-light 15.4'' wxga.

If you aren't planning to move the thing around too much, I suggest the 1710. You get more for your money, IMO.

It really depends on what you want to do with the notebook. If you want portability, go with the 3200, if you are looking for desktop replacement and occational movement around the house (near an outlet), then I'd go with the 1710 series. I personally chose the 1712SMI and am very happy with it. It is heavy and the feet on the bottom make it uncomfortable to have on your lap (not to mention it's 15 pounds) but all in all, I'm very happy with my monster notebook.

I've taken the 200 gig WD HD from my desktop and swapped it with the 120 that was in the Acer 1712. I've also gone ahead and ordered DDR 3200 memory. Even though I didn't notice the difference in performance between 2700 and 3200, it bugs me that the FSB and memory aren't on a 1:1 ratio so I'm replacing my 1 gig 2700 memory with 1 gig 3200 memory. Until a new graphics card comes out for the 1712 or the CPU prices drop on 3.4 chips, I think I'll be done with the upgrades.

are the graphics on the 1710 user upgradeable?

people on this site have been saying that they managed to upgrade the amb on the ferrari to a 3200+

how do you do this?

The graphics card on the 1712 and 1714 can be upgraded (if/when they make a new card for them).

The upgrade for the Ferrari is just replacing the CPU (I believe). You can upgrade the CPU on the 1710 with faster Intel chips too (think the highest right now is a 3.4 gig Northwood or Prescott).

you can replace the processor on the ferrari 3200? how can you do this? does it void the warranty? is anything else apart from the normal(ram, hd) replaceble on the Ferrari?
