Can't play any games on Linux.

I've tried Mandrake 9.1 and RedHat 9 and I cannot play UT2k3, Quake, wolfenstein, nothing.
All start up, but as soon as I try to load a map, the whole box dies. All video is frozen, keyboard, mouse, etc.

I can ssh into it, but I can't reboot, if I try to do that, it's all dead. Please advise. This is really really painful.

Grandmaster Lee

Umm, it seems that your OpenGL subsystem isn't working. Try rebooting, don't launch anygames, type glxgears in a terminal in X.

If it doesn't show you the 3 rotating gears with a FPS count, it isn't worth going further. To sort it, do as root:
# ldd /usr/X11R6/bin/glxgears

And look which libGL.so.1 is being used. What drivers are you using ? Chech in your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file.

Hope that helps. Yes linux needs tweaking, and even the biggest names such as mandrake cannot deliver a 'PnP' Distribution. Looks like ya expected everything to work no tweak. _Please post the relevant lines if ya want me to help you further.

No, GL is working.

glxgears works fine, ldd shows that GL is happy. GLXinfo as well. The games start up, but only work in the menus and never work once it tries to load the maps. I dunno wtf is wrong here. I'm re-installing, AGAIN, tomorrow after I move everything to my homedir.

Wish me luck.

I re-installed, still no joy.

I tried Enemy Territory, q3a, and ut2k3. All stop right when starting to render the map to the screen. I can still login through SSH, and X is at 99% and nothing else seems to run. Killing X locks the box.
So, at this point I don't know how I'm supposed to be able to diagnose this further, until after trying the ATI drivers as well. If they lock up though, I'm at a loss and need someone to help me understand how to get more than chromium and tuxracer working on the 8887 with X 4.3

Games work now.

I used the ATI drivers, all games play fine. No lockups, etc. I did hit one lockup scenario where I had everything adjusted to their highest settings in UT2k3 at 1600x1200. That made it not happy.
But aside from that all other games play fine and 2d isn't that bad either. Not to mention, now I can dual head too.
