Got a nasty little bug on my computers, help.

On either thursday or friday i picked up a nasty spyboy/virus, not sure that prevents me from saving my home address which was yahoo.com as the default. Instead a pop-up spyware plagued site reveals its ugly bad designed self on my screen. And when using aim some of the same popups appear, that say your computer is infected, check out these spyware sites? I tried them and still the problem persists. So my current solution has been to use Mozilla and not use aim. I would like to resolve this as quickly as possible. Is there any good free virus protection software out there as well?

try cwshredder program for the home page problem.
disable messaging in your services and make sure you have a good pop up killer.

Try download.com for free virus scanners like Avast.

How do you do that. DOes that involve reinstalling it? I hate doing that.

hit F8 when windows is booting, select safe mode, and a prompt will come up asking you if you want to do a system restore.

i didn't see the prompt. what exactly is a system restore?

Download ad-aware 6.0 , maybe this program can eliminate this bug.

I've never done a system restore, but from what I know (or guess) a system restore is basically like loading a "save point" :P But I think it requires to set a restore point at some place in time, it'll snap a snapshot of your current configuration and save that. When you restore it will try to switch everything back to what it was at that point.

from your desktop, click on Start, Programs, Accessories, and then System Restore, from there select Restore to previous point and then select the point in time from the calendar

very simple

If adaware 6.0 doesnt work (make sure to update), then download spybot from download.com. It gets what adaware leaves behind. BTW if you detect quatro adware, you have to manually go into the registry and delete the keys, which can be dangerous if you dont know what your doing.

I tried doing a system restore to the day before the virus infection but the system restore said it couldn't be restored. <BTW what a redundant statement!>

Did you make sure you picked a highlighted day on the calender? You can only choose certain days to restore to that are highlighted differently than the others.

It doesn't look like its free. I really don't want to have to pay anything if i can avoid it. Sweet the banana animation is back.

That Ad Aware seemed to fix the aim problem. But i still can't use internet explorer safely. I guess i will stick with mozilla. It reminds of my linux days as well.

If you have the same thing I spent 6.5 hours on Monday exorcizing from one of the company laptops, then I truly pity you. I tried (3) separate manufacturers of software (Symantec online scanner, Moosoft, and Kapersky) to get rid of it. I ended up manually editing the registry file to get rid of the URL's, and other stuff, stuff was hidden everywhere (makes me wonder if I caught it all). This thing is so new that nothing detects it. The guy was checking up on some of the sites his son was surfing (using the company laptop for pete's sake). All (3) computers in the house got screwed up trying to support this porn addiction - go figure, one stops working, go to the next machine. What the hell is this civilization coming to?

Not sure if this is what everyone does. But when ever a virus is found on our computers by my college, my school says to run turn of system restore then start the computer in safe mode and then run the antivirus scan because it is better. I have done both and found that more viruses were cleaned in safe mode. Again I am not sure if everyone does that already but it is worth a try.

Sure, not turning off System Restore can do some pretty screwed up things, and it will fight the AV system restoring the deleted files etc. depending on how far back the clean restore point is from initial infection.

For those that are really into reading, Symantec has quite a bit of free online help for performing some of these processes.
