the enhanced is certified for 24/7 operation, whatever the heck that means. The specs are identical, I would assume that the enhanced produces less heat.

Does anyone run the 7k60 in 24/7 operation? Anyone have problems doing that?
iono why you would need 24/7/365 unless you were running a server with the notebook lol

So...

So I just have to take the 7k60 then ? I don't want to pay the extra fee, that's just ridiculous, and like turanuk says, who needs a 24/7...

Thanks guys

I've been using my 7K60 for about 8 months now and I cant even remember the last time I left it on 24 hrs much less a week at a time.

The HD is still running perfectly and fast as ever. I've used it at long ass all day->night lan parties, and leave it on overnight for downloading and it sbeen fine.
OF course I put the laptop into "portable/laptop" mode and make the LCD turn off when downloading overnight.

yeah I'm assuming this is for "permanently on" type setups, so it produces much less heat. Actually if it's only 20 dollars more, I would get the enhanced, just for the peace of mind that it is okay if i do want to use my notebook as a server one day...not.

I was reading about these two versions and in the comparison there were actually some drawbacks listed for the E version. I forgot what it said, I need to find that article again. Basically the gist of it is that you dont need to upgrade if you have the original, and if you are going to get a new laptop, get the new one if the price difference is minimal

drawbacks for the enhanced? That's what happens when marketing and engineering are separate divisons ROFL.

Engineering: okay this model is slightly differ-
Marketing: Let's call it enhanced!

edit: yay 1000 posts lol.

looks like the 24/7 just has an "instant on" feature where it never actually turns off. Interesting. I guess I can see how that would be a disadvantage lol.
I've read somewhere that it is no designed to be carried around (the 24/7 one), like in a server. Don't remember where the article was

and i was about to get the E7k40 (7200rpm 40gig...$150). Sp tje E is less rugged and is not ment to be carried around...like it would have issues if i am doing it in the car? this sucks. anyone know where i can pick up the 7k40 (regular)? thanks!

i would also like to here more information about the 24/7 hds in notebooks, i havnt heard much of anything about them yet. i often leave my computer on all the time for dling music/movies/isos/ect on p2p programs, so this might be of some benefit to me, but anyone know of how these effect battery life or any other possible drawbacks?

I run mine 24/7 since I got it running Folding@Home. Unless you're doing very I/O intensive tasks, I wound't worry about the HDD wearing out.

Even if you do wear it out, it has a 3 year warranty from Hitachi.

the OEM one has a three year hitachi warranty? That's surprising...

have you ever seen a RETAIL boxed notebook HD from HGST?

I think for a laptop the regular 7K60 is fine, it supposedly is better accomodated for mobile use and movement. If a laptop is on 24/7 then its likely not be moved around very much, at least not far from a power outlet anyways so it all depends on how you are going to use your notebook.

I have never seen a retail notebook drive, perhaps places like FRY's sell them.

I bought an OEM version from Bason Computer about 5 months ago, and it did have 3 year warranty.
My understanding is that all Travelstar (retail and OEM) have 3 year warranty.
The warranty statement for the drive can be found here:
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/suppor...ty/english.htm

Here is a link where you can put in your serial number from your Hitachi drive, and it will tell you how long is remaining on the warranty:

I am having isses. Found the e7k40, cant find the 7k40 though. I don't need 60gigs and saving $50 is good for me (will allow me to grab the 3400+ instead of the 3200+. From what i read, the "e" is ment for 24/7 run and it is made so it is reletively silent and runs cooler than most others.
