M6Ne brief review

Well, got that new laptop and I already hate it and wish I should have reordered CL56.

The screen is beautiful with great viewing angles... but it's a wide screen with the resolution that's just killing me. I have 20 inch LCD 1600x1200 and I miss that....

It has good build quality but the design is a little weird and it seems huge, and i just don't like it very much

The speakers are pretty decent, much much better then on CL56

It gets pretty hot at the bottom in the center center, as far as I remember CL56 was running a lot cooler

It has cool blue lights, the keyboard is ok, might take some time getting used to the function key next to the CTRL.

3dmark score is 2750 stock@391/209

well, If you are thinking between this one and CL56, I would go with CL56 again...

UGH!! What a downer review. Sorry to see you're so disappointed with your M6N, Klas. Can you return it? Maybe you could sell it through this forum or on eBay?

overall it's a great laptop, just not for me. I am going to play around for another couple of days and see if I can get it exchanged for CL56

I just remember that I was happier with CL56 despite the screen viewing angles & weak speakers

can anyone tell me what's the advantage of WXGA screen? I really don't see any, even for movies it's not a big deal...

Too bad

That's why i always ask people what kind of screen they want and would they mind the sacrifice in resolution b4 they buy a notebook since the screen is what they look at most of the time.

Definitely agree! I think a desktop or notebook screen is kinda like the speakers on a home theater system. Ultimately, all the technological wizardry has to sound good, so top-notch speakers are the key. So, too, with your computer's screen. If you're not pleased with what you're looking at, everything inside the box means nothing.

Hope you can get the CL56, Klas!

Wow. I was about to purchase the Asus M6N, but now this review has caused me to review my purchasing decision. Is it really that bad? What is the max resolution the laptop can handle? I'm using 1152x768 on my desktop now.

klas - M6Ne is the 15.1" model... but ur talking about a widescreen?
also, i have seen much higher 3dmark scores on the M6N even with 9600 on this forum

rsmash - seems that klas's complaints are mostly subjective... i'm definitely not turned off by any of what he's saying (from my understanding of what he's saying)

The reviewers criticism seems to stem from a subjective preference, rather than an actual "quality issue". The screen in question has a resolution of 1280x800. It's up the the individual to determine if this is satisfactory. You may want to head over to best buy and look at a monitor with that res before making a purchase.

klas ordered the 15.1 but he changed it to 15.4

That one is easy to find, but trying to compare the WXGA to the SXGA is nearly impossible. No one carries that! Ugh.

Just venting.

sey...where do you live? at microcenter (not sure if there is one around you) they have plenty of sxga+ models
post #13 of 50
Just checked their site. Closest by me are in Chicago, 2 hours north.

Any other stores known for carrying them? I've checked Best Buy and Circuit City. We also have Office Max, and Office Depot 30 min away, and a few locally owned shops I plan to check.

...For every sprinkle I find, I'll kill you.

yeah WXGA is pretty stupid. The compaq r3000 i had had that, and it was one of the reasons i returned it.

I totally agree!!
90 percent of the time I have wasted (not making a decision on what to buy)
has been devoted to screens, one way or another. What size, what resolution, can I view it easily without glasses, etc. I totally agree with jswriter. Picking the right screen for you is the key element.

yeah I'm worried about SXGA+ being too small for my eyes, but whatever. I'll get used to it

The M6N is not bad at all. I saw a forum member's (phairest) 15.1 M6N here in Austin. It is the screen that is (or was) supposed to have the "gradient issue" but hers looked very nice. I did not closely check the viewing angles, and that is another concern with the SXGA+.
What you have to understand is that one person's dislike of a notebook's screen (or any other feature) does not necessarily mean that it is not the perfect notebook for you. Some people (like klas) don't like WXGA, and many people absolutely love it!! Some people want a 12" XGA screen, some people want 17" ultra-high resolution. What you like is all that is important.

Now, if I could only take my own advice, things would be perfect!!

Is your vision better than 20/20 at a range of 2-4 feet??
If so, you should be fine. If you wear reading glasses, and/or progressive's it may bother you. I thought that I would be absolutely fine with a 14.1" SXGA+, but then I found that it was giving me eyestrain after a few minutes, and that I was having to blow everything up, so there was no point.

I have glasses, so I dunno..

edit: nearsighted of course.

If your vision is 20/20 or better corrected, and you don't get headaches or a lot of eyestrain reading or looking at computer monitors, chances are that you will be fine.
You can always:
Turn up the DPI in Windows, set Windows to large fonts, use the zoom in IE or other browsers and in Microsoft Office products, etc.
For me, I just knew that I was tweaking everything so much, that plain old XGA (or WXGA) was better for me.
Unfortunately, it took me about 3 months and about 12 trips to various computer superstores to come to that conclusion!!
Also, I wear reading glasses, but make a huge effort to not wear any glasses at the computer, even though I should wear them.
