8790 versus 4750: Who shall be King? - Page 7

Kind of an apples to oranges comparison when the resolutions are different. Also, it depends on what you want out of a screen. I was pretty convinced that I wanted a 16.1" UXGA screen and wasn't going to settle for anything less, but the options piled up on the 8790 and I went w/ it. I thought I was going to dislike the widescreen, but I absolutely fell in love w/ it. I had a 15" on my Sony and refused to go that route again. But now that I've got my 17", I just can't imagine having anything less.

So to me, while there are a lot of ppl happy w/ their 15" UXGA screens, comparing to a 17" just isn't the same. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.

OK, so we covered that the screens are different, hehehe. Now, from the benchmarks i've seen the 5690 actually beats the 8790 b/c the gpu is clocked higher, yet some complain of heat. I wonder if the 9700 on the 4750/4790 will come clocked higher than the 8790 or not.
i hope so, i think the amd uses less voltage so it could safely be clocked higher. i hope sager does this though. i won't something that will be clocked from the start like the 5690. but with an wsxga screen!

does anyone know if fan noise is a problem on the 47xx series?

I mean, can I attend a University lecture without the fans bugging my classmates?

I don't think i am anymore, it seems like people are having too much trouble with it. I'm gonna get a nice usb optical mouse and keyboard instead. Wires aren't bad if you only have 2 or 3.

i dont' think it would be a prob, but if for some reason your fans kicked up, u could dl a nice fan utility and shut them off.
and burn your hands too . get a keyboard if you turn off the fans, so you don't injure your self. i wonder if they make liquid cooling for laptops. that would be freakin sweet.

I am sooooo tempted by the 4750... my only concerns are size and noise.... I guess I will have to wait for you to take the plunge mayaman
post #131 of 166
thanks. you make it sound like a big risk. well i'm ready to take the plunge now but the damn thing has to be lazy and not come out for 2 weeks. I hope the 15th isn't a thursday because that would mean i probably wouldn't order it until friday. as for heat and noise, i'm sure its not as bad as a desktop, i haven't had any laptops so far, so i don't know what to expect. as long as this thing has a ton of power and all the ports i need, i should be happy.
I should be happy too... I am just going through the oh-my-god-i'm-about-to-spend-3500-it-better-be-perfect phase.
are you getting the hypersonic ax7? i think you could for that price. or like a gradient paint job from pctorque, and a probably 2 gigs of ram?
oops... 3500 Canadian... after the crippling tax, which means 2000-2200 US.

as far as fans and heat, the 4750 should be no worse than the 8790, 5690, or any other top-o-the-line DTR. wait till it comes out and then decide. wait wait wait BAH I HATE WAITING! *shotgun to the head* ...

Alright already, I think everyone has agreed that this Post should END!

If you like wireless, go bluetooth. Having a wireless mouse is wonderful. I was kind o' wish-washy just before ordering my 8790, too, but I'm glad I did. Love love love it.

And Ogre, I think there's only 1 or 2 ppl having problems w/ it. The rest of us are just fine. Odds are it's a funny little setting somewhere that's getting overlooked. Definitely worth the investment to go Bluetooth. Why have 2 or 3 wires when you can be down to one? (AC power)

to save money.

ur prob right that it's only 1 or 2 people, but wireless tech is still in its infancy and it's kinda expensive.

... wait, what's that?!? Giant mutant bananas are running wild in the streets! Everyone grab a hammer quick!

Big decision on the 15th.

I am debating between the AMD and the INTEL Sagers as well. My purchase is more for applications like Photoshop and Maya rather then gaming.

I found this site which benchmarked the two chips. The data may help to shed some light onto which machine to go with.

Because of price, the Intel P4 EE 3.4GHz on the Sager NP8790 was never an option for me, I was leaning Intel P4 3.0 or 3.2 GHz Northwood to save some $$$$.

Looking at the benchmarks for the Maya and Photoshop tests, and coupling it with whatever the AMD 4750 price tag will be, I may go Sager 4750.

fun, fun, fun
