Yet another RAID question.

Well, I ordered my 8790 but without the dual 60 gb hard drives because I'm simply too poor. I'm curious though, if I could get the Hitachi Travelstar for muuuuuch less, is it possible to configure both my drives in RAID 0 even though my first drive will have some stuff already on it? Thanks for your help.

If you ask Sager to configure it as RAID-0 with the one drive when it is "put together", yes. Otherwise you will need to set it up as RAID-0 and then reinstall everything.

I called PC Torque and they said that I won't be able to successfully RAID the drive unless I reinstall everything. They said another alternative would be to ghost the drive and then RAID the drives. I don't know, maybe RAID isn't worth all that effort. (I'm reaaaaaaaaaaally lazy). Thanks for your help, though.

Raid 0 is not for lazy people. You better have a consistent back up plan or you could lose ALL your data just because of a minor harddrive glitch.

At least I think this is true, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

There is a given probability that a HDD will fail...this is the same for all HDDs of a particular model. Because RAID-0 utilizes 2 HDDs, the resulting probablity of experiencing a failure is P(HDD 1 fails) + P(HDD 2 fails)...so if P(HDD 1 fails)=P(HDD 2 fails)=.0001 (1/100 of a %) then the P(experiencing a failure under RAID)=.0002

What am I saying?...only a fool doesn't backup regularly regardless whether you are running RAID or not...everyone has a probablity of losing data.

Probability calculation is flawed. Backups are a given - even without raid if you really wish to preserve your data.
