Light-weight case for 5660

For all of you looking for a light-weight case for your 5660, I have found one that I really like. It's a CaseLogic neoprene laptop briefcase. You can look at it
here .

This case snuggly fits the 5660 (I don't think an 888x will fit in it, tho). It's got padding in the main compartment, and the outside is weather-resistant (think: wet-suit for your laptop). The only part that I don't like very much is the shoulder strap. But since I will rarely be using this case by itself (I have a backpack that I carry most of the time), this is an inconsequential problem for me. This case is exactly what I was looking for. A light case that protects my laptop, while also being able to fit into my backpack. If you're looking for this kind of case, you really should check out the Case Logic one.

I agree with this philosophy... I want a "wetsuit" for my future 8886 so that I can just put it into a regular backpack or something like that.... But I don't know how safe that is. The padding is prolly not the best or the safest by any means. Anyone have suggestions about this? I initially planned to get the basic case from PCTorque for $15 and just using that when I didn't have much to carry (just the laptop and power supply and mouse), and the put that in a backpack if I had more things to carry (ac/dc inverter, software, other modules, etc). Anyone have recommendations or concerns? Thanks!

Habib

PS: I noticed that thread where a 3 ring zipper binder was used as a case for the 5660.... That would be sweet because they are stiffer and so corner damage if it was dropped would be lessened... Any ideas like that for the 8886?

I thought about the 3-ring binder idea for my 5660, but when I went to check them out, I couldn't find anything that would work. All of the newer models that I found didn't have the removable rings. Oh well.

As for the Case Logic case, I doubt that it will fit an 8886. My 5660 just barely fits into the case.

Good luck with your search

Hmmm...
I realize that published numbers really don't tell
the tale, but the 8886 might work:

8886 dimensions:
14.17"W x 11.77"L x 2.15"D

5660 dimensions:
13"W x 11.4"L x 1.7"D

Case Logic (banana skin ) dimensions:
15.5"W x 12"L x 2.36"D

wetsuit-tight, to be sure, but seems do-able...
maybe not such a great option if you
want to carry the power supply, mouse, CDs, etc.

(just my $0.005 observation.)

lol, that's sweet. I like it :-) I'll have to check on the price of that sometime. And yeah, it would be annoying if one had to carry other things, but I could deal with putting that in a backpack since it's inevitably tight in a regular laptop carry case anyway (by regular I mean the $15 one and others of that genre, lol).

Another case worthy of mention:
The Targus Sport Deluxe backpack...
Model TSB312 (platinum/black) or TSB315 (blue/black)
Dimensions (for computer compartment)
14"W x 10"L x 2"D

There's lots of padding in this case, so a big Sager should fit
with a little effort and wear-in nicely. LOTS of pockets everywhere.
Highly recommended by several posters around the 'net.

That's great to know... I had a feeling it was a nice case just from the pics. I've seen them in stores sometimes and they are always catchy and tough-looking. I'll have to look more closely next time to see what I think with more specifics. Thanks for the info!

wet-suit 8886

I searched around looking for a wet-suit for the 8886 and stumbled on this model

Jansport Network T015

Foam padded compartment fits laptop.

D-rings on side.

Back zippered stash pocket.

Padded back

Fabric: 450D RipStop
Weight: 11oz
Dimensions: 12.25" x 14.5" x 3.75"
Interior dimensions are approximately 12" x 14.25" x 3.5" with .25" padding around.
Torso Length:
Capacity: 650 cu in
Suggested Retail Price: $24.99 USD

It seems to lack a bit in padding but is the right size for the 8886 and it comes in 4 colors.

I like it... Actually not too shabby on price compared to some. I bet there is a way to mod one of those with some kind of steel frame on the corners to better protect the corners of the lappy... that would be my main concern.
