7405GX Hinge Crax

I bought my 7405GX last Xmas with the extended warranty from BestBuy. I thought I dodged the hinge cracking issue until today when I noticed a crack spreading across the left hinge.

I love my 7405GX because, for a measley $1300, I can write my dissertation at the coffee shop and school the Counter-Strike: Source kiddies when I get home.

What can I expect from Best Buy these days? Will they allow me to trade in my laptop for a new Gateway? Do I have to buy a new extended warranty if I do? How long does it take to get my rig back from the service center? I have lots of work to do over the next few months!!!

drawkcab, I've had my 7405gx for the same amount of time. I first noticed a crack developing on the left hinge about a month ago. I've been thinking about bringing it back to BB, also - can't decide whether to live with it until it starts chipping off or just take it back now. I bought the 3-year warranty also.

Thanks to the info in this forum, I returned my 9 month old Gateway 4535 with cracked hinges back to Best Buy to replace the cover. It was returned to me within 2 weeks at no charge.

Gateway Still offers service ...

FYI: Regarding cracked hinges on Gateway 7405GX, Gateway just issued an RMA for the return/repair of this notebook for me . This after 10 months of use!

If you have purchased a 7405GX within the last 12 months & have cracked hinges, Gateway will warranty this under the standard 12 month warranty issued with purchase.

I purchased my 7405GX @ BestBuy without an extended warranty or service plan & hoped Gateway would take care of issues like this....and they did!
Fingers crossed on results of RMA service, will post back in about two weeks or so when I receive unit back.

DialUp

PS, Im nervous as hell doing this as my notebook works flawless regarding hardware/software & perfect LCD pixel display...hope they dont screw anything up during repairs, lol.

RMA feedback

Its been less than 5 buisness days since I initiated my request for warranty service on the cracked hinge issue.

Much to my delight, FedEx just dropped of my repaired 7405GX. Shipping was done priority mail @ Gateways expense, very fast for traveling over 5000 miles for repair. First impressions are a job well done, though Im suspicious of replacement cover as it looks less than new [marred surface, paint worn off @ corners....very strange ].

QUESTION: Has anyone here had their hinge repair crack again AFTER being repaired the first time around?

Geez, thats not good news dogi! Do you recall when the first hinge repair was made? I'd like to get an idea on how long the first repair lasted you.
Gateway extended my warranty for 90 days on my first hinge repair [I hope they used a new & improved method for me so I dont have to re-do in the future].

Thanks

Office Depot extended warranties are worthless. I bought an M6410 in 6/2004. Both hinges have cracked and broken and now the power jack isn't working. I sent it in to be repaired and they won't repair either problem because they say the unit was dropped. It hasn't been dropped. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON OFFICE DEPOT EXTENDED WARRANTIES!

Retraction about Office Depot Extended Warranty --new provider Warranty Corporation of America, is AWESOME!

I posted last night about my dissatisfaction with an Office Depot Extended Warranty I purchased in June 2004 while they had Service Net as their warranty provider. This morning, after a few well directed emails, countless phone calls, and possibly these blogs, I received a call from a very nice gentleman from WaCA. I'm confident that my laptop will be repaired with no more hassles. Lesson learned - It's not enough to trust the company you're buying an extended warranty from. Check out the company that is actually providing the warranty. In the future, if a company is providing services through Service Net, I will not buy ANYTHING from them. But, given my current experience with Warranty Corporation of America, I will buy from Office Depot again, including extended warranties, as long as they keep Warranty Corporation of America as their provider. Bravo to Office Depot for recognizing a problem and fixing it by changing providers! And hats off to Warranty Corporation of America for doing the right thing and stepping up, even though they didn't have to.

mines turned out just like yours. ANd that same day I was saying, I'll fix it in the summer.... and bam broke like 20 minutes after I said it. So have u gotten it fixed, or are they saying no to fixing it. I put my pieces back in places, and it looks the same from the front and the left hinge is still open, but I hope they wont say the same. Because, this happen ALL by itself.... They need better screens, or fix the hinges.... And to think that I just bought it in August, and it's only Febraury...

I've had mine for a couple of months now and I'm very afraid of what could happen. I try to baby my laptop as it is the second most expensive thing that I take care of.

Are there any ways we could avoid this from happening?

My 7426GX has cracked now. I have sent it in once for the screen being so lose that it almost closed itself. You could get motion sick trying to type. lol But now the left corner hinge has cracked exactly as everyone elses. I guess I have to send it in again.

A positive post for a 7405gx purchased 3/2005. White stuff, I mean hinges are crack-a-lack free. I loaned it to a friend, who is a sound engineer, in May 2005, so I am sure it took many beatings touring the globe. Just got it back this May (looks shocked) and all is well. Hope I never have to post otherwise.

My 7405GX started cracking in Sept of 2005, and I never sent it in as I had hoped it would only be a cosmetic problem. Much to my chagrin, the metal hinge underneath the plastic finally broke last week. If you look at the previous pictures taken by others, it is the metal that is held together by those brass screws. The whole left side of the screen came apart!

Now for the good news...I called Gateway support on Saturday May 20th. Even though I was out of warranty, they agreed to fix it and EXTEND the warraranty for 90 more days. I got the shipping box on Monday May 22nd, sent the box out DHL on Tuesday, and I got the computer back on Friday May 26th. Not to shabby! It took them less than 2 days to complete the repair.

From the looks of the repair, I cannot tell if I got a new screen. I did get a new outside case, as there is a new Gateway logo on the cover, and they also replaced the plastic molding that holds the power button and quick launch buttons.

I am very happy with the support, and if you need to get this fix, the computer will only be gone for a few days.
