Pics Of Cracked Hinges - Page 4

Here's mine:
http://premium.uploadit.org/TimothyB/6805_crack.jpg

I just noticed this one yesterday. My 6805 is 8 months+ old, S/No: N3041. I treated it with care. Rarely took out and when I did it was in a $80 padded laptop bag. After learning of this problem a couple months ago on forums I thought I was in the clear since I've had mine for so long, guess I was wrong.

The horror of it all (I hope I didn't miss a pic):

can anyone tell us if emachines or gateway have fixed this problem in their new machines? I just ordered my 7405gx and I sure wouldn't want it to crack like that..
so any news on this thing being fixed in new laptops..

I've heard the 7405gx have had cracks, even seen a pic. I don't know if emachines or gateway consider it a flaw anymore or if they cover it and so on. I have a Best Buy warranty, so I don't worry, though if you get a bad one and can't be without a machine at any time, you might want to look more into on how the 1 year warranty would treat it.

If gaming isn't in your future with a laptop, I've seen a nice HP laptop for $1350 after rebates that matches the 7405GX, but a 64bit 3400+ and 100gig drive, just doesn't have a 9600 ATI, but a weak GF4 mx440. But the case design and Harman/Kardon speakers make it look more attractive.

I think it's this HP laptop, which has more rebates or something in store:

See, I just don't get that.
They put together a laptop package with great specs. Then put in a POS video card like the GF to go.

Morons.

Well, if your talking about that HP, I call it trade off for the better cpu, harddrive, and casing/speakers if you don't want to game. If they threw in the a better video card it would cost more.

just to make sure...the cracks are only cosmetic, right?

and, if you return your laptop with cracked hinges and get a new one, what's to say the new one's hinges won't crack?

so...what's the point of returning it if (1) it's just going to happen again, and if (2) it's just cosmetic and doesn't really hurt anything but the image?

That's the strange thing, emachines says the manufacturing problem has been fixed, so getting the laptop fixed would make sense if it doesn't break from then on. But oddly, even the new 7405GX still has the crack now and then, so it's kind of strange.

Some people have said the crack gets much worse later on, even breaking apart enough to see wires.

To me, having my 6805 replaced with a 7405GX seemed worth it If you have a BB warranty and if they say you can exchange it, you can then choose any brand upto your purchase price unless you want to pay the difference. So you can choose another laptop that won't have the problem again. But if they don't offer an exchange and you don't want to be out of a laptop for a month for service, just keep it and repair it with the methods people have come up with using certain tape and so on.

dang, decisions. I'm planning on purchasing a 7405gx soon (I don't have any emachines laptops). Should I keep it if the hinges crack? Should I get the Best Buy warranty? Argg!

Sorry, Can't show pic's of mine because it's in getting repaired right now.

I bought my 1st M6809 from BBuy in June and got the 3 year warrenty. Got one crack right away and took it back within 3 weeks. BBuy replaced it after keeping it for a week and then telling me they can't repair it.

My second one developed cracks in both hinges by October and I finally got around to taking it into BBuy in December. They have had it since. I called about status and they told me that they remove all the guts and put them in a new case and I should have it in a week.

I'm of the mind to then take it directly to customer service and tell them I want to replace this with another manufactures laptop. Two things I don't care for on the M68xx series are the chinzy speakers and sound system and the inability to turn the touchpad off by just hitting a button.

I have had 3 Toshiba laptops and an HP and I think I'm going to get the HP ZV5340 even tho it has the Gforce video card. I don't do much gaming on the laptop but is that video card really that bad? Any comments welcomed.

I do like that it has the better speakers, the nicer touchpad and control, plus the 100GB HD and 64 3400+. Right now its the same price I paid for the M6809.

Will try to post on if the M6809 repair is any good.

one of the most rugged laptops- sharp actius rd. during 14 days (untill i was able to return it to the store) i tested it quite extreme- 3 times slammed opened screen to close with big force, pushed as hard as i could on laptop touchpad several times, well after more than 1.5 year using it i have no other complains, but dead battery/not working charge board. it occured after more than year- gradually- first battery will not charge to full, after that not charge at all- just light will blink...

I just had an RD10 in here to work on about 3 weeks ago. Oddly enough, the back half of the middle hinge cover was completely broken off. I have no idea what kind of physical abuse the machine had been subjected to though. Those machine do have very nice screens. They are extremely bright without having to deal with the reflections commonplace on these new glossy screens.

are these gateway model laptops or Emachines?? I am still confused on how this merge works...do they still make both brands or did they fuse? does emachines AND gateway have their own customer support? do the gateway models crack the same as these emachines here??
A few of the Gateways have also been cracking, but the percentage seems much, much smaller than the emachines problems was. As for your original question, neither. They laptops are manufactured by Arima and sold to gateway, emachines, voodoo, and a few other retailers.

I had an Emachines m5312 for over a year and no hardware or exterior defects the entire time. Perhaps they are heading in the wrong direction with their laptop quality. The same goes with Gateway, never had any problems. Maybe I just got lucky?
It's not a Gateway/emachines problem. It is an Arima problem (the actual device manufacturer).

seems e-machines are out of bussiness- all they make is one laptop model. gateway still using similar(the same???) enclosure , but offer only laptops with pentium processors.

hp suck, because they make quite bulky/heavy laptops. compaq make better ones, but they have a very uncomfortable keyboard/touch pad (that one simly suck).

On a positive cracked hinge note(If there is such a thing). I purchased my M6810 in October from Best Buy and just recently noticed that I had the cracked hinge issue. I Promptly called E-machine on a Sunday and told them of the issue and they sent me a RMA carton on the following Tuesday. I shipped back the M6810 on that Friday via Fex Ex Express NDA to Texas with the PPD label provided by E-machine. I recieved my M6810 back on the following Wed on my front porch. THAT WAS ONLY 3 WORKING DAYS from the time I shipped to return. They completely replaced my LCD and hinges and they seem to be of a heavier construction then the previous. I do know that it is a new LCD due to the fact I placed a tell tale mark on the screen so I could tell if it was actually replaced.

I was very leary when I purchased my M6810 due to previous posts on the cracked hinge issue and overall E-Machine support but after this experience I am very pleased with my purchase of the Laptop and the service from E-machines.

wow this thread is gonna give me nightmares. to everyone with a cracked hinge i feel your pain, it happened on my last laptop(gateway), the entire screen came off. it was only connected by wiring. if that happens to my alienware im gonna be really mad. again good luck to all of you.

Do the new gateway models still have this problem or was this design flaw fixed?
