7405GX cracked hinge

I bought my lappy in november 2004, and the dreaded crack hinge finally surfaced on mine. Unfortunate.

Hello all, got a question on my hinge problem. I posted a while back about the left hinge cracking, which I have done grown to live with, but a few days ago I noticed the right hinge cracked. Yea I have read that they both probably would crack over time, which I don't really care about the looks of the cracks as long as the rest of this thing runs right. My question is, the screen still feels the same as day one, not to tight, not to loose, no squeaks, so should I even bother trying to send it in? After reading all these post everyday, I have horrors of their support service. I have no other problems with the laptop, no bad pixels or nothing, just these dang cracks! *knocks on wood *

Would taking the front housing off the lcd and using red loctite and tightening the screws on the hinges up stop them from cracking any more than they done have?

Thanks for any responses in advance.

I will compliment arima's knuckleheads on fixing the cracked hinges. But all other issues, and they usually just say, "nothin wrong" and send it back. Go ahead and send it in, at least it will last longer. I don't know if the new casing is perfect, but it is definatly better.

Unfortunately it's not resolved. I bought my 7422GX on 2/19 and I noticed the crack last night.

Is the M460 the same chasis as the lappys with the crack isue? I would rather avoid a problem out of the box.

Edit:
No cracking probs on the M460 is good to hear! Thx!

no the M460 is a different case.

Thats it, Im sending my gateway 4012gz for repair and the second it comes back its going on ebay.

Both my hinges are cracked. Too bad because I really like the laptop. Cracked hinges drop the resale value of a laptop $100 easy....Its safe to say there are a few jobless design engineers out there today.

Time to switch to a Dell 600m....

Anyway to Tell?

Is there anyway to tell if the hinges have been replaced on my laptop? I bought a refurbished M6811 about a week ago, and I'd like to know whether or not they have been, so I don't have to worry about it.

Also, I just noticed that the serial numbers listed for the affected laptops begin with a Nh, I think it said. Well, mine starts with RH. Is that because it's refurbished? And, Im wondering, would mine probably already be replaced?

I have two of them right now. I bought one a week ago, and recieved it, and the video card was faulty. They sent me a new one, and I'm waiting for the packaging to return the first.

Both Serial numbers begin with RH3892410xxxx.

RH= refurbished

3892=refurb SKU for that model

410=when it was refurbished (in this case, last October).

it's possible they have already been replaced.

The serial number on my 7405GX starts with N304B D10 XXXXX and it has a crack on the left hinge. I bought it 2 months ago... The crack is really small though compared to all the pics i've seen here. It is concentrated in the middle of the hinge and it doesn't reach the sides... yet?

the 4b indicates the machine was manufactured 2004, November (B). The B is the month number ... they run 1-9, then a-c for oct, nov, dec

I really appreciate this forum. I bought an m2350 last summer which has the same case as the other eMachines models with cracked hinges. And, of course, both hinges cracked considerably. Also the screen wobbled nearly 2 inches when open, which I don't find very functional. So not only is it a cosmetic flaw, it is indeed a structural problem. Aside from that, I loved the machine. I read and read the postings and solutions you all have submitted on this thread and others. I purchased the extended warrantee with Best Buy, so I thought I'd try my luck at exchanging it.

About 2 weeks ago I went in to the store and explained the situation to 4 reps and managers altogether, all of whom were very understanding, but who said that eMachines no longer allows the store to exchange the product, that they ship it off for repair for about a week at no charge to the customer. I knew all this from reading the postings. What I also knew was that the laptops often come back, to have the hinges crack again in a few weeks. The last guy I spoke to was the store manager. I let him know that it is unacceptable for me to pay $1300 for something that has this problem. And may continue to have this problem. And I let him know that the day before a rep on the floor told me that if I had purchased the extended warrantee, Best Buy would take care of me. So against "store policy", I was allowed to exchange for another machine of my choice. I found the HP dv1217 for the same price, a smaller and lighter machine with more hard drive and dvd burner. I really love it, since I now travel between states for work and school and the lighter laptop is much easier to carry around.

I went into the store with a commitment to being patient and polite, and also being clear that I was going to be taken care of to my satisfaction. The manager at the end was most helpful and was in a position to override policy. I feel really lucky that he was there, since he shared with me that he was being promoted and would no longer be in the store. I think it was fortunate timing and all the right people in place that made it work, too.

So thank you all for your experience and sharing. I would not have seen any choices available otherwise.

All the best.

Could somebody list the e-machines and gateway laptops that have the case which is having the cracked hinge issue. Is the 7320gz have this problem also? Thanks in advance!

Is there any actual structural damage to the hinge?
post #100 of 138
I've had my m6811 for a little over a month and now look... I don't remember that before . I know its not much to look at, just a hair line fracture compared to the others posted in this thread. As long as it doesnt get any worse, I should be alright . For the time being i have put some tape over the cracked hinge to hopefully stop any further damage.

I just hope my hinges don't explode
