MWave Compal CL56 or Acer Aspire 2012WLMi

What do you guys think. I spec'd the CL56 out to be almost exactly like the Acer. The CL56 turns out to be just a bit more expensive. I can get the Acer for $1450 shipped whereas the CL56 is $1481 + tax/shipping. The only real difference is the DVD burner on the acer and the 128mb 9700 on the CL56. I can't make up my mind. I really want the 128mb but am not sure if it will make a big difference. Which would you guys choose. If I get the cl56 it will be probably around $150 more cause I gotta pay for tax. Is the 128mb + SXGA and lack of dvd burner worth the price difference or should I just go for the Acer? HELP

if you even had to ask the question then it sounds like the 128mb is not very important to you. You save 150 and get a dvd burner. And its not like you cant play games on the 64.... we are just greedy

why does everyone need dvd burners? i have a dvd burner on my desktop pc that has never been used

if it's between video and dvd burner, i would choose video

im using the Acer Aspire 2012WLMi right now, i must say, wide screen is quite nice... I would go for CL56 if its cheaper, other wise get 2012 for both power and looks.

i saw somebody configured a killer CL56 system on the forum for around $1480 shipped with a carrying bag, (rincewind??) you might want to check it out.

Dang !!!! you guys are quick to respond, thanks for that. But I guess the question would be is the 128mb worth the extra $150+ over the 64mb 9700. I do like my games like Far Cry and KOTOR. Can't wait for HL2, just want to play it at a decent framerate, think it would be possible with the 64mb ????

At one point in time HL 2 was susposed to run on 64 meg cards at the Minimum, but I could not tell you for sure as we are now on the N zillionth cancled release date. It was said somewhere in these forums (wher i dont remember) that (all else equil) the difference between 64 and 128 megs in vid memory is only about 5%, but If you dont have a 7200 rpm hard drive it is going to make more of a difference. remember Laptop drives are slow, Hard drive swap is BAD news. Expecally in a Farcry Smoke bomb battle

Mwave has Kingston SODIMMS 512meg pc 2700 ~(99$). I called them and they only put pc 2100 in the Laptop so If I were you I would add on the PC 2700 and Install it your self.

--- EDIT

Correct me if I am wrong, but I bet the ACER only has a 4200 rpm drive.
Is the Acer Screen WVGA or WSVGA?

Probably a better screen on the Compal

Diebach - Do you have an issue with the lid not being 100% shut when u close it? There's an annoying 1mm gap on the right side that bugs me everytime I pick up my 2012.

You also get a much better lcd on the Acer.

I was considering the two same exact options you were considering.

Here is why I ultimately chose the CL56: http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=29972

Hey rincewind how can i get a similar spec'd out cl56 as yours for under $1700 like you say. I checked our ibuypower. And a 1.7 w/512mb and a 60gb 7200 hd runs over $1700. Any other sites with better prices. Mwave is cool but I would like to get a CL-56 with a DVD +- RW burner.

You think they will haggle? I live in LA and can pick up from them. I like there options they put on their laptops and prices are fairly reasonable. Only problem is i gotta pay taxes for it, wish I could order the same type of laptop like their 1.7G CL56 for $1699 without tax, any similar spec CL56 for sale out there outside of California?
