The restore disk is where Toshiba dropped the ball... .... I used another copy of my XP home and then used the Toshiba XP license key so it would be legit. Once you use your personal XP home disk you can use their restore disk to install all the necessary drivers so that is a good thing.
After I posted that last message, I went down to CompUSA to obsess some more. I realized I could buy the XPPro upgrade and do the same thing and have Pro instead of Home.

..... when I realized that the express media player software HAS to be installed before the operating system is installed!!! ........ I just hate that I will be unable to use the express media player as it has some nice features if I ever wanted to use it!
This may not be a bad thing for me. Those front panel buttons always bugged me. If the express media player software is not installed, does that mean the buttons don't do anything at all... even when the computer is running?

The front panel buttons still work, they operate Windows Media Player when the computer is on. The Express Media Software is initially controlled by the three buttons on the left of the keyboard under the power button. Without the Express Media Software installed the express button seems to only turn the computer on just as the power button does.

well i want to add this computer to my list now!!! how is the battery life? and what is with the 12 cell? price, size, how long will this last ? thanks, tom

Battery life with various apps running while surfing net with wireless on, about 2:30 to 3:00 hours. This depends on screen brightness ect... I keep my screen brightness on about 5 of a scale of 8. Full brightness in a darkened room is blinding!
Not sure about the 12 cell as I don't have it but more power would be good!
I think the 12 cell battery is only around $30 more than an additional 6 cell on the Toshiba website if I remember correctly.

I get about 6 hours on the 12 cell battery in default normal mode with full brightness. I got my battery on Ebay for $12.50 plus shipping a total of $24.50. It is a brand new still sealed OEM Toshiba 12cell battery. One thing to keep in mind if you go with the 12cell it is quite a bit heavier and bigger then the orignal 6 cell.

HOLY SMOKES.... was the 12-cell for the M30/M35 series or some other series of Toshiba? I am off to Ebay to check this out!
M30/M35 Series. I don't know if there are anymore up on the web like that though. I know back in Earily July Circuit City had a glitch in their computer system that put an 100 dollar instant savings on a lot of the toshiba batteries making them ring up around $10. A lot of people caught wind of this and bought as many as they could and resold them on ebay. The reason I know this is because I used to work for CC and a former co-worker informed me after I bought my Laptop and was looking for an extra battery. There may still be some left, but you should still be able to find one well below the $130 in the retail stores.

Asus Friend,

Just bought a M35 SE, I just deleted the partition, and installed a slipstreamed XP SP2. How can I now install express media palyer?

Thanks

Bad news Charles, the Express Media Player software has to be installed prior to the operating system. To top it all off, according to Toshiba, you have to use their own factory restore disk for the operating system which means all that "bloatware" gets reinstalled defeating the purpose of a "clean" installation of XP. When I rebuild my laptop again I will probably just do a factory install and try to remove as much of the "bloatware" as I can as the Express Media Player is a nice feature and I hate not being able to use it!

I was at Circuit City this past weekend looking at the Toshiba and the salesman told me that it was going to be discontinued because the price reflected a secret code, so I asked him to explain the code and he said "When the last number in the price ends in a 5 or a 6 instead of 9 it means discontinued/or not available when stock runs out"(example $1895.95 vs. $1895.99)

Do you agree with this statement?
(My suspicion, he was trying to generate an immediate sale???)

I called Toshiba and they would not admit that the M35 was being discontinued but he did say that it's not unusual to replace a product with new models approximately every three months...

well i think hes right ...no where else i could find this particular modle on sale..the new qosmio modle replaced all toshibas high end lappy....

i still got mine from MicroCenter though ,

Asus Fiend : this is question for you if ure still hangin around this thread, say if I replaced new 7200rpm hard drive , Do i have to have use their Recovery disc to restore win xp home in order to make all that functions works (EX: volume, battery profile, hot keys..etc) or is it possible to have my own clean XP PRO install and then just run recovery disc to have programs installed?

let me know if ure still kickin
one more thing ..have you tried the dvd-ram I have had some hard time burning functional dvd R. it just won't play on my regular dvd player for tv.

what programs do you use?

i use clonedvd
furiousleader... I am STILL kicking!!! Actually if you upgrade your hard drive as I did, you do not have to use the restore disk. I had a copy of XP Home from another laptop and I installed from that disc but used the license key from the Toshiba laptop so as to be legal and all... You can then install the drivers and software individually from the Toshiba drivers disk. I did this but eventually went back to the actual Toshiba restore disk so I could have the Express Media Player functionality. You loose the EMP function when you rebuilt from ANY other disk other than the Toshiba restore disk. Do be aware that another user in this forum tried to install XP PRO on the Toshiba model that was purchased with XP HOME and had problems. For some reason they not only had driver problems but also EMP problems. Toshiba tech support told that person they should have bought the Toshiba model with XP PRO preinstalled since their is an M35 with XP HOME and one with XP PRO (not very good support there!!!).
I have not tried DVD-RAM on the lappy as I have experiemented with it before in my home video DVD burner and it just would not play in any of the home DVD players I own. I gave up trying and just use DVD-R only now.

hi thanks for your fast reply!

well. i just placed ordered for 7200 rpm hddrive, hopefully gets here soon, but for time being ive already go ahead and upgraded from HOME to PRO , and believe or not, everything seems compatible and runs fine, EMP still works so either my guess the other guy had clean install of xp pro on new hdrive causing his problem or maybe just the toshiba tech putting up these BS....but either way if its true about clean install ima just go ahead use recovery disc restore to home and then upgrade to pro on my new hitach 7200rpm hddrive..

thanks a bunch

by way, the little thing that' really buggin me is always damn video card, it makes me feel like i owned a laptop no different from those who runs on one of those intergrated intel extreme shared graphic...

because i do some medium gaming and graphic works, and actaully sony Vaio S was my primary choice, but like you made your choice the screen intrigued me from purchasing this notebook so do you think by any chance at all if its possible to upgrade the video card to at least 128mb or maybe gforce fx go5700 like new quosmio series??? that'd be sweet ..
Well.. not sure about the video upgrade possiblities. I am OK with the video card as all I do is video work so it is fine for my application. I do not game but I'm sure I would see the limitations of the video card if I did game.
BTW, you'll love the 7200rpm drive!!!
