*HELP* 5690 randomly turning off

I own a 5660 laptop for the good part of 1 and a half years now. Unfortunately, in the last couple months I have been having a very strange problem with my laptop. It just completely shuts itself off without any warning. What I have noticed is that this only occurs when I am using Windows Media Player or playing any sort of video game. However, this never occured before when I had purchased my laptop.

I was hoping someone could try and tell me what my specific problem might be. Whether it would be the graphics card, or the motherboard in general, or the fans aren't working properly anymore. Any feedback is much appreciated!

My laptop specs are:

2.4G Pentium III
512 SDRAM
30 gig hard drive
ATI 9000 Mobile graphics card
Windows XP Professional

Sounds like you are plagued with "dust bunnies". Try cleaning out the heat sync and see if that improves things. All indications point to a heat problem.

What materials would best be suited for dusting that part of the computer?

Start with plan old canned air. Make sure that the fans are kept in place (I use a tooth pick) and the spray into the intakes and see what happens. If that doesn't work, then you may have to remove a couple of panels to get at the heat sink. Search for the AS5 thread (sticky).
