8790 and BlueTooth "mice" - Page 2

hmmm... I am looking at gettin an 8790 in conjunction with the logitech dinovo wireless desktop.. i noticed in the sys req. for the dinovo it states: "IBM®-compatible system without Bluetooth pre-installed." I talked to my nerdlinger buddy and he seemed to think there is bound to be some kind of work-around and i noticed both friedtoast and drawmonster have managed to get their MX900 mouse workin using their internal BT cards.. So i guess my Q is will a BT wireless desktop function perfectly with preinstalled BT so long as the hub is connected? Ultimately it would be ideal if i could get the whole setup workin dreamily offa the internal BT card - but I would be happy enough so long as the whole desktop functions properly when i use the hub & i can run the mouse off the internal BT card without the hub when I'm on the go... any help is much appreciated.. pce:stv

Thanks again

Well, it's 2:30 a.m. Eastern and finally after having my GX-7 for about 3 weeks, my MX900 is up and running without the hub!!!! Holy Cow, what a frustrating time this has been. I refused to stop trying even after the Tech's at Hypersonic said Logitech stated they would not work. Here's what I finally did to make it happen.

I uninstalled the Billiontion software through add/remove software and then went to the Sager support site. Ended up using the Model 4760 drivers page and the 1.42 version for bluetooth. Ran the install and after a little troubleshooting, everything started working. Here's the link to the page and if 4760 is clicked on a new window will open up with the drivers.

Once I downloaded the new version, the initial attempt still didn't work, then I checked the device manager and sure enough, all of our favorite Big Yellow Question Mark was in the USB column. I right clicked on it, went to properties and hit "reinstall driver" and like magic the Billionton bluetooth popped up in it's own column and it was resolved. Then I went back and doubled clicked on the Billionton bluetooth module and ran the device set up. This time the MX900 pic looked like a mouse and no "?" over it. When I hilighted it, proceeded with "next," all of the software started installing and when it was done, the mouse is working flawlessly! The only two buttons which don't work are the scroll buttons above and below the scroll wheel (which is kinda redundant with the wheel right there anyway). Man is this mouse smooth and fast.

I don't know if it matters, but, this time while I was playing around with the whole process, I didn't have the USB hub to the MX900 anywhere in site. It's currently hooked to one of my desktops in another room. Before when I had it present, I couldn't even get the lappy to recognize the mouse at all. Not even detect that it was present. For some reason when I started attempting to connect the mouse to the lappy this time prior to the new 1.42 version, it would show the MX900 with a question mark in the pic and not let me connect without a pin link.

Well, I hope this helps at least one person get theirs up and running. If nothing else it shows it's possible on the GX7. Now I'd better create a restore point while everything's working since I don't know what will happen on the reboot. Oh yah, just a footnote, I also have both the wifi and bluetooth running together without problems. Technology ROCKS........when it works! I'm going to bed now!

Glad to hear that you got yourself up and running, finally. Hate to hear of anyone having problems- especially when the rest of us are, for the most part, running the MX 900s w/ no problems.

Just wondering- when you were trying beforehand, did you have the USB cable to the MX 900's base plugged in one of the USB ports on the GX-7? If so, I would've thought that would've been your problem.

Hard to say, though. Just glad to hear that you're on the move

Yes, initially I plugged the cradle hub into the usb port. Once it picked up the mouse, but wouldn't do it again and never would link again without the hub, even if it was disconnected but still on the table beside the machine. I downloaded what I would have thought to be the latest version from Hypersonic since the date on their website was 06/18/04 on the driver, however, looks like it was still the 1.3 version, not the 1.4. Oddly enough the Sager site doesn't have the 1.4 version under the 8790 model. Equally frustrating was the fact the tech guy at Hypersonic couldn't get it linked and figured out either. I was feeling like the $100.00 for the mouse (not counting paint) was a glorified hub dependant piece of hardware.

I think without a doubt anyone who gets this mouse should take the advice, plug the hub into another room and never even approach the machine with it. It was like once it tasted the hub it never wanted anything else. Oh well, thanks anyway Friedtoast. It was some of the threads in this particular and some earlier ones which put me on the right track. I knew if at least two of you had it up and running it was possible. Have a good one!

Bluetooth and WiFi Interference

I finally got my MX900 to work with the built-in Bluetooth hub without a PIN code, but after I installed XP SP2.

I also installed the Microsoft drivers instead of the Billionton driver. When I went to install newer drivers to run the on-board Bluetooth, Windows Update installed 2 Microsoft Bluetooth drivers. One driver was dated as being written last week.

Now the Bluetooth drivers work great, although I can't get the page-up and page-down buttons on the mouse to work. Even after I installed the MX900 drivers from Logitech. It seems that the buttons are programmed, or at least work because the Bluetooth driver allows the service or something. My guess is that the Microsoft Bluetooth driver doesn't know about the extra buttons so it can't serve them up through the Bluetooth protocol, regardless of which mouse driver is being used.

Anyway the real problem now is that the Bluetooth mouse lags bigtime when the WiFi LAN is pumping away. That is, the radio signals from the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are interfering with each other when the WiFi is transfering a bunch of data. When I was downloading my CS patches from my other PC, the mouse was almost unusable.

Which doesn't surprise me, look at this report:

Bluetooth and WiFi Interference

Seems pretty clear that using a Bluetooth mouse would be subjected to radio interference when the WiFi is cranked up transfering data.

Does anyone know of a way to help prevent this or reduce this interference? (Besides plugging into a wired LAN.) Like perhaps sliding the WiFi up or down the spectrum a bit to reduce the interference.

Someone mentioned elsewhere changing the channel/frequency so that it doesn't share the same one w/ the WiFi. I've not done that, so not sure how, but I would imagine if you look into it, it probably won't be too hard to find.

Yea, I saw that in my Linksys configuration the other day. Right now it is right in the middle of the spectrum.

I guess I have a 50/50 chance picking the direction that decreases the interference as opposed to increasing it. :-)

It was on channel 6 - at 2.437Ghz and I switched it to channel 2 - at 2.417Ghz. I'll keep you posted.

I'll try and run a big download again when I have a chance, and see how it turns out.
