Is there any way to get a retail version of a 9700???

no there is not.

edit: also, 9600/9700 isn't that big of a difference...the video card is integrated into the barebones motherboard, i think you can remove it, but good luck finding a compatible upgrade.

It's not yet possible to run out and buy a new notebook graphics card and upgrade. Some companies offer proprietary upgrades, but there's no standard for them like desktops. It's pretty close to the top of everyone's wishlist, I think.

Edit: Yep, he's right. It would be like upgrading a desktop with an X800 to an X800 XT. It's the same core, but the 9700 was made differently so that it can be clocked higher.

As far as I know there is no way to replace the video chipset on that kind of laptop. Alienware offer the possibilty to upgrade it but I think it's the only brand to do this. Nvidia announced their proprietary technology "MXM" that will make this possible but it isn't avariable yet. I think ATI is working on such a technology but I don't know much about it and it isn't avariable either. So, no I don't think that what you are looking for is possible
