Asus W1N vs. Acer 2010/20

Thread Starter
I'm so terribly, painfully torn between the Asus W1N and the Acer 2010/20, and i'm just itching to order by the end of the week. Hopefully someone can help me out with a few snags I'm hitting, though:
  • Can anybody comment on the screens of both notebooks? I've heard both are great displays, but is the 1280x800 resolution of the Acer "too low?" Especially compared to the W1N's...
  • Does anybody know how I can get a Dothan-equipped Acer model without the Aspire Arcade controls on the front panel?
  • Does anybody know if I can get the W1N with an ATI Radeon Mobility 9700, instead of the 9600? If I oc the 9600 chip, will the performance gap be bridged?

Thanks a lot for any help--I'm going out of my mind! Wish I could just combine the two lappies!

I had Dell 8600 with a WSXGA+ screen and now own an ACer 2012WLMI with the WXGA. I can say that after a few minutes, you get used to everything. That's the weird thing with displays...good or bad, the human eye tends to get used to it to the point where the new screen feels natural.

For what it's worth, I use an 18.1" lcd on my desktop @ 1280X1024. The 15.4" WXGA screen has text, etc that is pretty close to the way it looks on my desktop.

Just be advised that the W1N has shared video memory. I haven't checked the Acer, but some Acers do as well. If that is possibly an issue for you, don't fret -- you can get similar models with real graphics for similar pricing.

That shows a regular ATI 9600m 64meg VRAM chip.

Shared?

I dont think so...

Well, as per forums and whatnot, check the specs with the manufacturer prior to believing anoyones secondhand info- including (especially including) my own.

Mind that- and thers a ton of threads rolling on wxga vs wsxga+ - that at native res, the 9600 is going to have to work harder on the higher res screen to produce the same FPS. So the 12x8 res will run cleaner given the same vid card.

From what I read, you canslightly overclock your 9600 and get the same numbers as a stock 9700. Seems like the 9700 is just a 9600 running a touch faster. BUT, dont quote me on it. Or do. But check it out yourself prior to purchase.

My w1 should be arriving within minutes. My favorite three words- on the ups site- "out for delivery" lol.

Mind that I am also an asus fan and as such, biased. But, I am biased because I think thier stuff kicks butt. So... there ya go.

Thanks for the info--where did you configure/order from, if you don't mind my asking?

EricT, where did you configure your Asus W1N? Please post pics and a review if you can!!

LOL

Heres Eric about to get in trouble with the forum mods...

Configured- the W1 is only orderable one way. So... I got a W1. That was the config!

Its a PM banias 1.7ghz, 768m ram (dont know what chips/config on that) 80 gig 5400 hard disk. WSXGA+ screen, DVD R, plus and minus, hehe, and a bunch of goodies. Those being 3 cds full of games, pair of headphones, a mini mouse that is aluminum and matches up the laptop case, all the usual cables. No blocking try for the DVD player or the PCMCIA slot, was surprised on the latter. XP pro preinstalled, comes with recovery disk, all drivers pre installed. Which means of course, time to go get the new ones...

I am replacing a similarly configured M6n. I wanted the DVD drive and the higher res screen. However, I already see 3 things I am going to miss on my M6n.

How I got it... er, I ordered it from the manufacturer, through my wholesale house. I am a reseller, however, heres the disclaimer kids- I dont- and wont- sell online. I sell to my local clientele only. So if you PM me asking for one, too bad. Really. Thats not the business I wanna get into, I have no credentials online, and dont trust people like that. Either that or go shopping over at Michaels or Go-L. hehehe.

If you want one, I highly recommend proportable.com - Justin over there has good ins with Asus and gets his stuff direct too. He's a very friendly guy, give him a call.

Okay, enough of my getting in hot h2o with the mods. Hehe.

I will however, post a side by side comparison/review here at some point per the 2 boxes. I wait now for the battery to finish charging for the first time, then I start it up!

Rrrghh... charge... faster!

The thing is damn pretty though. And that is a big reason I got that one, although not for the motivation you might think...

More in an upcoming review. In the meantime I stress this, firmly; dont believe what some guy types into a forum. Including me- check out the specs yourself. Not to slam Sey, could be an honest mistake, I dont know or care. But nothing against anyone, its just a good lesson to learn.

eric... wut r the 3 things u miss with the m6n?

IR port is on the front of the W1- my printer is IR. M6n has that on the side.

Hard button to disable wifi card. I know most people dont care, I use this alot. I like it.

Little biz card holder on the bottom.

And yes- I am that picky. Hehe.
