I'm with Mayaman. I'm impatiently awaiting the arrival of my top o' the line ATI X800 XT 256MB Platinum Edition card!
god that thing could probably run 2 rings around my older 128 radeon 9500 pro. that's pretty impressive to me.
I think he knows what kind he wants he's just looking for what brand. gforce is just as good as the x800 pro, forget which gforce it is. As far as brands go just go for the cheapest one. They all have to meet standards when it comes to quality and as long as it has a warranty your fine. I would just look at newegg, or some other place, and find the cheapest one.

Is it PCI-E? If not, it won't be top of the line for long. I'm not buying motherboards, memory, or graphics cards untill the new technologies take hold and get some good products out. Buying before then means your going to be looking at some amazing reviews in the coming months and wishing you could return the component that you just bought.

No you won't. Even the x800xt can't max out agp8x. You're not going to see any improvements for a long time. By the time graphics cards get to the point that they need pci-e it would be time to upgrade again anyways. Also the current games, and even half-life2 and doom3, won't bennefit from pci-e.

My point wasn't to say that graphics cards are going to be that much better. But a PCI-E motherboard, DDR2, and a new PCI-E graphics card will be a lot better. Not to mention the new processors that are coming out this summer. You buy an agp card now, what are you going to do when the new KING of motherboards comes out and your stuck with an AGP card? Processors and motherboards are already on the market, in 3 months, computer hardware is going to be a lot different.

He was't asking to buy a new mother board though. He was just asking for a video card. So i suggested the most practical (the 6800 nvidia would require a bigger power supply and would take up to ports!) x800 only takes up 1 port.

This is just the classic "let's keep waiting for the next big breakthrough technology" game we all play from time to time. Either card, the X800 XT or GeForce 6800, will play games brilliantly for years. Maybe these cards wil reign as the very best for only 3-6 months, when the next big thing, like PCI-Express, comes along. I guess I'll hafta learn to live with a card that only plays about 85-95% as well as PCI-Express based cards. Of course, by the time PCI-Express hits the mainstream, others will be crowing about the NEXT big thing around the corner if they just wait another 3-6-9 months or so.

There hasn't been a change over like this since the PCI to Agp switch years ago. I'm not one to wait on the next best thing, but this is a major change, not just a new card. I've had my Asus 9800XT for about 4 months. It's already second best. But going from AGP to PCI-E is worth waiting for. Everyone has there own opinion, but I'd rather save and get all the next gen hardware than get the best current generation product. The motherboards and cards are already getting reviews. You can already buy a lot of the stuff. 3 months and we'll have the choice of AGP vs. PCI. Go to Dells website, you can already order a computer with PCI-E mobo, Video card, and DDR2 memory.

but your missing the point, he just wants to upgrade his video card.

thanks for all the off topic talk but I am sure that I want the Gforce Fx 5700 I just dont know what kind of maker is the best. nvidia makes chipsets seperate companys manufacture the cards
post #14 of 37
go with the manafacture that either packs the most games with it or has the best review on amazon. amazon reviews are similar to this site, although they don't seem to be monitored.

I could care less of free stuff I am going for performance here not like I'm pore and I already have al the games I need for now I want a nice video card

Have second best isn't bad, I think thats what drawmonster is missing. There's no point in waiting for pci-e to come out if your not going to benefit from it. He just wants a new graphics card, and he'll be getting the best out there. That card will last a long time.

evga and chaintech seem to be quite popular among people.

If you're looking for a pre-9800/5900 video card then I suggest you go for the 9600xt which is considered a lot better than the 5700.

But if I were to pick between the latest video cards I'd go with the geforce 6800 for the true trilinearing as I'm sure nvidia will be releasing better drivers to take advantage of it. Unless of course you don't meet the hardware requirements for it.

While people are helping with the title of the thread, the original poster should've titled it "what color box should I buy?"

They already know that they want an Nvidia 5700, and just wants to know from which company to buy it. The fact is, most of these companies just stick the same stuff on a PCB. Most of them differ by the software packages they include, a few of them offer different heatsinks, and very few of them offer cards overclocked by default.

Edit: Rather than asking for this type of advice randomly at a mostly notebook forum, I'd personally look at reviews on hardware sites around the net by searching for your graphics chipset of choice in Google (generally adding "review" to the search string helps).

i LOVE nVIDIA CARDS, its all I've ever boughten but if I were u I woulda went with the 9800xt or x800 pro card hands down. Just better bang for your buck, now if I had tons of money I'd get a fat power supply and the GeForce 6800 GT
