I just got a call recently from my cousin (he is younger like 10-11ish) and he said that he is going to get a notebook pretty soon like on mondday. He said he wants either and apple or dell, but im not sure wat to get him. I asked him wat he wants to do with the laptop and to my amazment he doesn't want to game that much. But he wants to be able to do some multimedia type of things on it, pictures video etc. so i was hoping if you guys can help me out here.
i should let him get the apple, but im not to sure about him not wanting to game on the laptop he is 10-11ish years old.......

Apple is over-rated in regards to multimedia this and that. Anything they can can, a pc can do. Get him a PC. It can game and do multi media stuff.

get him a nice, cheap dell. Probably should get a light one (under 6 lbs.) since he's young.

get him a gameboy. for the rest i guess a ibook would do. not too pricy, and imovie is pretty sweet although somewhat underpowered for my tastes.

Probably a 600m.

Why get a gameboy if with a PC he can just play GBA on an emulator?

If you want him to go with a light one, yet somewhat powerful, then I would recommend the 600m. It can hold 2 batteries if he ever needs it, for about 8 hours of use... and it comes with a ATI Mobility radeon 9000. I dont know if you can still get it configured with 64mb of vid ram though.

If he wants to go with a widescreen, then the 8600, which can also hold two batteries and which has a 9600.

Dell 9100 has great performance, but it is really heavy. The CPU is hot and pwer hungry, so it doesn't have much mobility.

Dell 8600 is the most balancing laptop in Dell notebook line. It has both great mobility and performance.

Dell 600m is lighter, but it doesn't come with 7200rpm harddrive and 128mb video card. It also has smaller LCD screen. It can still do video editing, but not jsut as great as 8600.

Apple? I don't like it. It is expensive, slow, and has less program to use.

PS. Dell Small Business is running 15% off for all notebook. It is the best to order one before Wendnesday. I have tracked Dell price for half year, and I believe this time is consider a great time.

You know what "multimedia" means right?... he wants to get porn

Unless he's going to be editing movies, the processing power required is minimal.

used Thinkpad T23s go for ~$850 on ebay if you can get him to wait an extra 3 days.

1.13Ghz P3
256mb ram
30gb hd
SXGA+
cdrw
9 cell battery

If you're lucky you might find one of those late model T23s with better specs for the same $$$

Then use the money you saved to get him books, cds/dvds, movie/concert tickets, or extra savings money.

I promise you he won't be anal about specs like most of us here -- I'm typing this on my P3-933mhz radeon8500 (which plays all my favorite games flawlessly)-- and will think you're the greatest cousin ever for giving him more than one present.

NO APPLE. Macs just SUCK. Dell is better (have 2 desktops myself...solid systems), but if you shop around you will see Dells are a bit +$ for what you get, but at least, if he is not a tech junkie, he will need it. Check out my sig, that thing for $1179 before mail-in rebate from hpshopping.com. The 440go is terrible for most people on these boards (gamers), but for "multimedia" and light gaming, it will burn through them like yesterday's junk. It has built in 54g wifi, you know what that means, if he has a wifi router, he can do media in bed . the setback: it is about 8 lbs and only gets about 3 hours of battery.

Another few budget books:
Averatec 3xxx - 12" about 4lbs, Under $1100.
Averatec 5xxx- 15" about 5-6lbs, Under $1350
Compaq 2500z- 15" 7lbs, gives you same juice (only amd instead of celeron) for a lower $
CL56- start at around $1500 but is a lappy of choice on these boards
Dell 1150-under $1000 base, about 8lbs, up to 7hrs battery, has a celeron and shared video (not good for media).

also, try to stay away from ebay, he will need SUPPORT and A LOT of it.
